Just bought, now problems surfaced

I JUST bought this truck on Friday from a used car dealer. I test drove it, and everything was perfectly fine. I am fairly familiar with these engines, as I grew up around them. However, here is my problem I am having........

I bought this truck about 150 miles from where I live. I drove it home, and it was perfect it on the drive.

All fluids are fine, etc.

However, yesterday and today, i noticed that randomly it looses power and wants to die on me ( today it actually did die once). It is completely random though. When I want the problem to duplicate, I can't get it to do it. It seems like it "misses and hesitates". When i hit the pedal, it wont let me go above 2k MAX if it even lets it move at all. It gets really loud on the passenger side of the engine. Almost as if it was missing spark plugs ( i know it doesnt have any plugs. I am using this as a comparison). When i stop, during this time, it shakes really bad. If I turn it off, and restart it, it will usually run fine like nothing even happened.

Today, when it did it, it actually stalled on me. I went to start it back up, and it struggled, idled at about 1000RPM. hesitating extremely bad, then died. It only stayed running for about 5 seconds. If I hit the gas, nothing happened. I let it sit for about 5 minutes, cranked it, and it started up. I put it in drive, and drove home. For the first 30 seconds, it was shaking really bad, then it drove normal. I got home, turned it off, and then immediately started it back up to see if it would do it again. It did do it again. I had it in park, and I hit the gas to see if it would hesitate badly as before. When I hit the gas, I noticed a hell of a lot of white and black smoke coming out of the tail pipe. This is the only time it has smoked. And it was a lot of smoke. I am at a loss here. Any ideas? from my research, I noticed that its a fairly common problem, but noone has given real good solutions. If anyone has any idea, please chime in. I would like to get this fixed asap. Like I said, I just bought this truck Friday in hopes of using it to pull my alumascape 5th wheel, but now am a little unnerved with it. Please let me know what you think.

And, as stupid as it sounds, please kinda dumb down your answer for me. I am not an idiot, but I am not a diesel mechanic either. Instead of abbreviations for sensors and parts, please spell them out in their entirety. I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you very much.

O, and also, I just went outside and started it up, and it runs like new. I took it for a 20 mile test drive and absolutly zero problems. WTF????

Truck has 235,000 miles on it.

2000 F350 dually, 235k miles, auto trans

My vote is (without a scan tool) for the Right side Under Valve Cover Harness not making a good conection all the time-when mine went it sounded just like you describe running very smoothly then acted like someone disconnected 1/2 of the cylinders-more folks have had problems with the RIGHT (passengers) side than the LEFT but the both do fail-You may have heard of the 50 cent mod where they grind down a quarter and slip in under the clip on the harness which is under the valve cover.

Did you buy from a Ford dealer? Maybe they could give you some free diagnostic testing.

No, just a small mom and pop dealer. Very reputable. They would not sell crap vehicles either. Everybody loves them. If they knew about this problem, they would not of sold it. However, they also will not correct an issue once it's left the lot. they are VERY firm on that. I have bought a few other vehicles form them, and they were great. I already called them about this problem, and obviously, they will not warranty it.

I would check your vehicle for open recalls: Recall Information - Ford

Cps are a pretty common problem and you could get a free one. The recalled ones seemed to run better unless of course they failed. Here is some more info that SuperCab was talking about: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/8...ck-shakes.html

I just check the recall info, it stated :

CPS and some speed control thing. Both were fixed according to carfax record a few years ago.

Recall Results - Ford
You still have two open recalls. I would get those done for free and go from there.

Here is what mine shows:

Your Vehicle

Vehicle: 2000 Ford F-250
VIN: 1FTNX21F4YEA10965
There are currently no recalls on this VIN.

Im confused then. By "Open Recalls" does that mean that they were issued, and never fixed by the owner of the vehicle? If I call ford with the VIN number, will they be able to tell me if they were completed or not?

Yes, they were never completed. When they do the recall it gets removed. So you still have these two that need to be done.

Recall: 07S57
Description: CAMSHAFT POSITION (CMP) SENSOR INSPECTION / REPLACEMENT

Recall: 09S09
Description: SPEED CONTROL SYSTEM MODIFICATION

Some people want to keep the orginal cps and just go buy their own and keep one as a spare. And there are those that won't let Ford touch there truck and don't take them in or fix the recall themselves.

Don't laugh, I just might do that-I am out of work again right now...I didn't do mine but feel that I could certainly help you out if need be.

As others have suggested I think the dealer at least owes you a free diagnoses to make darn sure what is wrong before you dig into it.

My trusted mechanic replaced my UVCH with the newer updated one and included a new style vc gasket too parts came from Ford and were almost $150.00......I wasn't brave enough to try the 50 cent mod.
