Dropping a valve isn't common in these, but it can happen in *almost* any engine, except the mazda rotary (ain't got none).
A minor defect is usually the root cause. Not much can be done to prevent it, short of having every valve/keeper/retainer x-rayed, and that's pretty pricey.

The head will obviously need to come off to replace the valve. I would use that as an investigative tool to see if any piston/cyl damage has occured. If nothing looks damaged, and the head also passes the inspection, I'd repair the current engine.
Damage to a piston will likely mean at least one piston will need to be replaced, so that would indicate a need for further teardown and inspection, to determine the best route forward.

I was thinking along simular lines.

The 302 is not going to like pulling the same amount of weight as the 300 either. The 300 has more torque than the 302.

If it's overheating, which is a good way to kill them, it probably has the small factory radiator. Going to the Super Cooling Radiator helps greatly.

Super cooling was standard on the 300 with A/C equipped trucks.

3000 to 3500RPM is concidered redline on the 300, depending on EFI or Carb, and other mods. Anything above 3000 is a waste on a stock engine because you are out of the 300s power and torque range. Most 300s build the best torque, (which is great for pulling) at around 1500 to 1800 rpms.

I agree with Rouge Wolf. Pull the engine apart and see what's wrong. If it was overheating, then fix that problem, or it can hurt the new engine, no matter what cubic inch displacement it is.
