4x4 hub trouble

I am experiencing a problem with the front left hub on my 1982 4x4 full size Bronco. It makes a rough vibrational/wearing/rubbing/grinding sound that is nearly impossible to verbalize the noise it makes. It is not doing it consistantly but on occasion. I have torn apart that hub several times now and have found nothing wrong. It only makes this noise (when it decides to make it) while the hubs are in the locked position. But its not necessarily the hub exactly that is making the noise. Any ideas as to what it could be? Any suggestions and comments would be appreciated.

How's your axle u-joint? When mine went in my 78 it made the same sounds. Didn't do it all the time either, just when it wanted..

Alaskahuntress, Have you pulled the spindle off and checked the inner bearing the front axle rides in?

You don't have the lock packed with grease, do you? It should only have a thorough film all over the hub lock - the wheel bearing area should be packed.
