Disappointing fuel mileage

I just got my SD a couple weeks ago. I wish I knew how crappy the 6.4 was on fuel before I bought it. I would have looked for a 7.3 or 6.0. I've had larger diesel trucks get better mileage than this POS. I've got friends with the 7.3 that get over 23mpg on the highway.

I do like the truck, how it drives and feels. But when I traded in my V10 Excursion that got 13mpg around town and 15mpg on the highway, I thought that a diesel truck would do at least that if not better. My '08 SD is only getting 9-12mpg around town and I haven't had a chance to check the highway since I added a Superchips yesterday. (I didn't have to remove the DPF since the previous owner gutted it.) My Excursion got 8-10mpg pulling a trailer and when I pulled a trailer with the 08, I got 8-9mpg. I did change out the EGR which has helped but not by much.

I'm very disappointed and am already looking to get rid of this truck for an older model.

Thanks for letting me vent. :-)

Sorry to hear youre so disapointed. I think the mileage is the biggest complaint with the 6.4.
I was well aware of the crappy mileage before I bought my 08', But the truck around it is just so much better than the 7.3/6.0 trucks. Well worth it in my books. I plan to do everything possible to help with mpg's though.

Did you buy it from a dealer with the DPF gutted?

To be honest I havent hand calc it yet.
I picked up truck in Vancouver and drove home, about 1300kms. The truck said I was getting 13/14 liter/100km which equals ~17mpg. (which sounds about right, maybe a bit high as Ive done the drive numerous times in the corvette which has fuel tank exactly half the size and could get 30+mpgs on highway. Could go about the same distance as truck before fueling up, so the truck having 2x fuel tank gets half the mpg the car gets.)

Around town so far Im getting about 17/18 litres/100km which equals ~about 13mpg, I think might be a bit high as well.
I will be driving back down south at end of the month towing an enclosed trailer with car in it, and bringing back all my and my gf's stuff, I will hand calc when I leave here for better idea.

Superchips, but from what I can tell he has been running it tuner free with the DPF gone until yesterday.

You can't run them without DPF with no tuner to turn the regens off. Sounds fishy...

How long have you had the truck? You posted you just added superchips yesterday, which means you have been running it tunerless until yesterday correct?

I bought the truck from the dealer with a gutted DPF. They didn't want to spend the money on replacing it so I took it as is, knowing I could tune it. I'm guessing that the previous owner gutted it but never tuned it.

I ran the Superchips program and drove the truck around town today. My Lie-O-Meter is reading 17mpg which is a substantial difference before tuning. I won't know if it's accurate until I hand calculate.

Its illegal for a dealership to sell a vehicle without required emissions equipment.

Wow, I can't believe your truck didn't go into limp mode without a tuner on it. You should see a 3-4 mpg increase with your tuner hopefully.

Cartmanea is right, its illegal for dealerships to sell you a modified truck. They have no problem voiding warranties on peoples, but if your trading in the truck they have no problem selling a modified truck to a customer. So in turn, I have no problem having FORD pick up the tab even if my tuner cases a failure....

Also, you have the ball in your field now. If I was you, I would go back to the dealership and tell them that if they don't fix it or give you another truck you will go straight to the Attorney General.

nomorecummins & cartmanea:

I bought the truck knowing that the DPF was gutted. The dealer was going to wholesale the truck but I told them I would accept the liability. So, if you are trying to find some sort of suit for reparation for me, look elsewhere. The issue is not what the dealer did or did not do. The issue is the crappy fuel mileage and steps to correct it.

Also, before tuning, the regen was still cycling and the DTC code was coming on. After tuning, no regen, no codes, and hopefully better mileage.

We are just trying to help, but it seems you know it all so good luck.
