Hi everyone! I am new here and i have a problem i'm hoping someone might be familar with. So i was driving my truck and came to a stop sign, as i proceeded to go i lost power going foward, the overdrive light was blinking, the wrench light came on, and the "trans fault" was displayed in the corner. I turned the truck off and the trans fault went away. The truck will go foward but revs really high, and i got full power in reverse. I used the code reader on it and came up with P0720( output shaft speed sensor circuit) and P2106(throttle actuator control system, forced limited power)
I first thought it was a transmission problem( before i used the code reader) since i couldn't go forward without reving the **** out of it and called a transmission place. I explained it to them and without looking at it they say it needs a new transmission. I was hoping that someone might have had some similar problems and could give me any information that could help. Does this sound to be a transmission problem or electrical?Help!!!!
I have not read about this problem on here but it doesn't sound like you need a new transmission to me. If that was the case you would of had some other problems leading up to that result. Anyway run a search on the codes and maybe contact a Ford service department and get some information from them on the codes from them too. That should give you a better idea as to how to proceed.

you have to read the codes in order so pay no attention to any after the first because the first one may have been the issue that turned the other on, so i would look into output shaft speed sensor. make shure its hooked up tight and not wet in the connector then if all looks good but still wont work replace it.
Thanks guys!! I have read that the output shaft speed sensor is on the transmission, on top of it and has 3 wires? I will go have a look at that, would be awesome if thats all it was! So because there is forced limited power, would that cause the truck not to go forward without reving high? I should have mentioned before that the truck would "hesitate" when you try to speed up. For example, coming up a hill it would hesitate and i would need to give it some more gas, or let off the gas a little and the truck would go back to normal. Thats the only problem i had leading up to this.
And of course there is nothing open here today! argg lol
Hey welcome to FTE!
At the top of this page is a bar with a selection for Aritcles/Specs. Look in there for the codes. Ford OBDII Diagnostic Trouble Codes - Overview .: Articles
And find another tranny shop that will actually find out what is wrong before tossing out a replace it quote.
Is your rig 4x4 or 4x2? If 4x4 the sensor is on the side of the transmission. See diagram below. If it goes bad then the PCM recieves bad data and gets confused and forces the truck into failsafe mode. Check the sensor, perhaps it just bad and you'll have an easy $50 fix.
No doubt! i couldn't believe the first thing they said was that i needed a new tranny! Without even looking at it! It sure isn't cheap thats forsure, so i'm going to make sure what the problem is first! Thanks shorebird i will check that out!
It might be the trans not going to lie. I had the same problem 2 years ago. We had some snow and I was hooking my girlfriends car on a car dolly that was in the barn. As I went to pull out of the barn I had no power and the wrench light was blinking and the trans fault came up. I put it in 4 wheel and the truck barely moved. I had to drive 5 miles to drop her car off it was the only way. I took it easy and every bump in the road the rpm's jumped but the truck didnt move any faster. I got her car to her uncles to get fixed and I turned the truck back on and everything was fine. A month later I went to back out of a parking spot and the truck would not go in reverse. After multiple trys and put it in reverse and letting it sit there the truck finally went into reverse. Took it to the ford dealer where I still had warranty they said I would probably need a new trans. They ended up telling me that I was a quart and a half low which was weird cause when the problem first happened my trans fluid was fine. They wanted 100 for a used trans or 500 for a new trans with warranty. I took the new one but also had to buy a new trans cooler other wise the trans warranty would be void.
I dont remember what codes I had but its similar to what I had happen. When it first happened I had no power in forward and reverse seemed fine. Hope this helps
I ran through the Pinpoint diagnostic procedures for P0720 and none of the outcomes terminates in a transmission failure. They all indicate either a short, open circuit, failed sensor or bad PCM.
The Pinpoint diagnostic procedure for P2106 states that if another code is present the P2106 can be ignored and to troubleshoot the other code (in this case the P0720).
This problem is not of the most common and it is not that easy to find an answer on the net. Therefore I hope you'll be able to help me even if this thread has been posted ages ago.
Indeed I'm encountering the same problem you had. Same codes and symptoms except mine completely stopped while climbing a hill. I reseted the codes and was able to make it move a bit while reving like hell.
I tested the speed sensor but got something like 465 ohm, so it seems to work well.
Could you please tell me what was your problem and how you solved it?
