Cam Pulley

I heard a wierd clanging noise coming from under the hood and noticed some kind of flange is rattling on the cam pulley.

I cannot find any info on it and Haynes and Chilton are no help.

What is it?

Why would it com loose?

What is supposed to hold it in place?

Or is it worse and some kind of major repair?

I have the fan, fan housing, and radiator out of the way to work on it.

The bronco is also shaking a lot since this happened.

So I am replacing the balancer, but first I need to get the pulley off.

Then how is the balancer installed?

the balincer is held on by the big bolt in the middle there are 3 or 4 bolts holdong the pully to the balincer so in fact a steering wheel puller will do the job better there is a key way inside the balincer you will see it when it comes off it is very easy to see what is what I just redid mine

Th pulley/harmonic balancer is mounted to the crank shaft. The camshaft drives the distributor and the oil pump.

In my case the balancer is not attached to anything, it spins freely behind the cam pulley.

First of all full size Broncos don't have cam pulleys . They do have crankshaft pulleys (that would be the pulley at the bottom of the engine). What you most likely have is a harmonic balancer gone bad . The balancer bolts to the crankshaft with one very large bolt in the center . Then a crankshaft pulley bolts to it usually with four small bolts.
The balancer can be gotten from Autozone #594-024 or NAPA # 600-5225 either for about $60.00 . I am guessing You have 5.0 L
These balancers are made of two pieces pressed together with a rubber between them and over time this rubber fails causing the two pieces to separate causing vibration and rattling noise .
