my 89 bronco 351 died while she was driving 55 on the highway, towed it home. the distributor rotor doesnt spin while im cranking it over but im also not getting a pulsating spark off the coil. The rotor looks like its shot, but before I start replacing things Im curious if a non spinning rotor definetly means a broken timing chain? Im new to the online auto help and any answers would be greatly appreciated
i wasnt driving she said there was some weird clanking noise and it just died. the oil gauge has been acting funny but i figured a bad sending unit. its not driven that much so i really havent been keeping up on this truck. im just trying to figure out for sure before i start pulling stuff apart. would a bad oil pump keep the rotor from turning? and i pulled the distributor just now the pins are ok the rotor turns with the gear
look at the end of the distributor and get a bit driver the same size and see if you can turn the pump buy hand and the check the cam out with a flat nose driver see if you can turn that gear if so chains broken you should not be able to turn the cam with a driver
the very end of it looks like a 1/4 inch socket unles the long allen wrench looking thing came out with it but if the sheare pins are in tacked you should get a punch and knock it out to see if that is realy the case some times they brake but eveything looks normal
i dont know what you mean by turning the cam with a flat nose driver? i cant get any torque on it. ive checked the distributor and i believe (cause no matter what i do the rotor and gear move together) its ok. got a extension and im gonna try to turn the pump if i can get at it in the dark. thanks i dread a t-chain break
got a 5/16 on there and it seems to be turning freely that sucks ill make sure tommorrow. the driver end is for the oil pump and the gear is off the camshaft? right?
just read your last reply and yes if i get it torn down that far it will get a lot of new stuff, 351 and all, but will a siezed oil pump stop the rotor rotation? i think ill pull off the valve covers tommorrow and see whats going on under there when i turn it over
yes if i have to ill pull it apart. but if the distributor is good... no broken shear pins... rotor doesnt turn is that definitively a broken timing belt? give me a whole bunch off reasons>>> oil pump, broken crankshaft(id have to pull the engine anyway) tell me its the ignition coil ?????????? or my plugs n wires?????????? maybe the flux capacitor???? actually my 4 year old really thinks its the flux capacitor shame on me! ive run all the ohm n volt tests what im not sure of is why the rotor wont turn. i cant pull off the oil pan without lifting the motor and im not sure about the timing chain cover got to pull at least the water pump is there a way to know without seeing the chain? im still not getting any pulsating spark off the ignition coil even after pulling the icm and ignition coil off a (very hesitant) neighbors truck after i put all his stuff back together his truck still runs fine. wiring harness? anything but a broken t-chain come on its a ford there chains last forever....right ???????????
