Does the 1999 F350 power stroke v8 auto have the e40d or the 4r100 transmission in it, and depending which one, what is the life span of the trans with a daily tow load of 34k pounds?
All of the 1999 product info on Super Duties stated that the auto trans trucks were built with the 4r100.
I had a 99 V-10 sd with it.
No problems but when my wife complained about driving the CC LB around town I dumped it and bought my current 6 speed PSD.
Now that's my daily driver and tow vehicle. She drives a Jeep now. Ughhh.
I despise automatics and the only recommendation I would have for you would be to get a 4.10 or 4.30 axle (depending on which motor your looking at) with the automatic if you will be consistently towing 4000 lbs. The V-10 I had was a 3.73 and it would fall on its face with a 6000 lb. load on any kind of incline and start hunting for a lower gear.
There is nothing I hate more than a machine shifting for me.

I forgot you were initially talking about a PSD.
The only rear you could get in a 99 PSD was a 3.73 in single rear wheel and 4.10 in dually for the pickup platform.
The 3.73 is not a problem for a 4000 lb. tow load with the 4r100.
If I had to order again it would be the manual trans. Both me and my brother had the same problem with our auto's at about 75000 miles. Torque converters dissinagrated. Neither of us did much towing either and changed fluid and filters every 30000.
ok i was thinkink 30k was good. 3k seems evcessive but im not sure. ive got 16k and havnt changed abything but oil and filter. getting ready for fuel filter
i would changed the fuel filter every 8 or 10k. I have towed up to 16,000# with my F-250 3.73 auto and i agree with rednekf350 the auto is crap. even when i towed a 185 cmf air compressor probably at 2-4,000#, on an incline it would be weak and slow (overdrive). If i could do it again i would have an F-350 4.10 6 speed NO doubt. My dad's 95 350 has the 4.10 and 5 speed and she is sweet when it comes to towing. I guess its a good thing cos now my F-250 is my toy and not my work horse . the auto with a 4.10 rear dually would be good for a 4,000# tow.
I am not sure what the problems you all are having with Autos but I run three pulling 14,000 # every single day and have 135,000, 175,340 and 226,000 respectively and have never had a single problem with the transmissions. I change the fluids every 36,000.
