I have a 1985 F150 with the 300 six and a C5 transmission. The transmission started leaking real bad and I have it in the shop with the option to get it fixed for 400 dollars. I have not got to talk to the exact mechanic yet but I can only imagine for 400 it must have some other damage.
My question is that I plan to put a 351 in it within the next year. I plan to do a moderate build around 400-450hp. Is the C5 worth fixing at this point? Will it hold up to that kind of power like a C4 will? I know the C5 is really similar to the C4. Will a stall converter made for a C4 work with a C5? I know with plans of a 400hp motor it would be best to go get a built transmission but I'd like to be money conscious right now and use the C5 if I can. If the C5 breaks at some point I would not mind replacing it at that point. Would really like to use the C5 but I've noticed they dont list stall converters for it.
So spend 400 to get my C5 fixed? Or tow it home and wait until I can save money and buy a C4 with a stall?
Running that much power you will kill a stock C4 pretty quickly. You need a stoutly built C4 or a stock to mildly built C6. Junkyard parts are readily available to make a C6 a bolt in replacement.
your c5 is a better base to build a stout c4.
your c5 may have a locking torque converter, doubtful though.
to build a c4 out of your c5 you may need a c4 bellhousing and a c4 valve body from a c4 1970 or newer and a c4 torque converter
your trans builder or you can add at least one extra clutch disc in that c5 drum

To help anyone in the future I'll update this thread. I ended up spending a good bit having the front seal replaced in the transmission. Got it back and it still leaked. Took it to someone else in town that someone recommended and they fixed it in about 30 min, was a modulator. Bad modulator was allowing vacuum to suck fluid into the motor and burn it off. I knew it wasnt leaking much when sitting still but thought it was leaking under torque maybe, but apparently it was all getting burned off in the motor. Was like a 50 dollar fix that caused me all kinds of headache.
