Rust Spots

I have the same type spots on my 03' F-650. Both doors. Same thing. Tiny holes through the paint with orange rust surrounding the spots. I'm going to keep an eye on these spots and contact my dealer. This truck only has approx 8,000 miles on it. Too soon for rust on this work truck. Jake.

Mine is NOT SURFACE RUST. I guarantee that no clay bar is gonna rub mine off. There is an actual hole in the paint and a halo of bubbles around it.

This is the first new truck I've owned, in the past I would have just either tried to ignore it or fixed it. But I'm not going to do either if this is Ford's screw up.

Is this a warranty issue? Anyone?

Waxy, Mine isn't surface rust either. I know exactly what you are talking about. It's almost looks like a pimple. It's got a hard, pin point shaped head with a small orange ring. Very small & black in color. I sure hope it's a warranty issue. I have too little miles on this beast for it to be a normal thing.
Normally, I wouldn't care too much if the truck had a couple of years and a fair amount of miles. Things happen. But this is starting to become a sore spot. Jake.

I checked my wifes sporttrac this weekend and found some of these spots on her bed, and there is no metal on the bed, it is plastic!

hookspacken- you should take your wife's sport-trac back to the dealer and tell them it is "infected" with rail dust. They should be willing and able to take care of it. By the way, Ford isn't the only manufacturer with this problem. My '03 GMC has "rail dust" on it too... even the plastic fender mouldings.

As for those of you with paint blisters, I'm not sure that the warranty covers it. If you read closely, the only warranty coverage is for "perforation". However, I'd sure take the truck into the dealership to see if they can do anything for you.

I had these rust spots on a 2001 F350 which was also white. They never appear on my Toredor Red Mountaineer though. These spots were hard as heck to get off with your fingernail which I did when I washed the truck. There were never any holes through the paint underneath them though. They may say this is coming from rail dust and some of them may be but I don't think mine did. I live in Tennessee and don't believe they ship by rail to Tennessee by rail. I know my 2003 came straight form Kentucky Truck Plant by motor convoy, not by train. It is only a few days old so I don't know if it will get them or not.

Nomo, My truck seems to have more than just a blister. It has a head to it. A black pin point head. If I rub my fingernail against it, it will pop off and leave a actual pock mark in the panel. This pock mark seems to be deeper than the paint surface.
As for rail transportation, I am not sure if my F-650 chassis would have been transported by rail. I didn't think that they would ship class 7 trucks by rail but I'm not sure on this. Jake.

Rust Spots

Hi All:

Well I talked to the dealer that sold me the truck, said bring it in, I could only go on Sat as I was working they said no problem we will be open, guess what only the service manager can deal with this problem and of course he does not work on Saturday's, Said I was happy for him I just drove 200 odd miles to get here and they could just call him in.

Need less to say they now think I am the biggest B**** in the country and I guess they might just be right, being a shy retireing wall flower will not cut it with these big boys, so Big mouth, loud voice, ammo is called for. It only took about 5 mins of me using my Mother Who do your think you are and your in big trouble voice to have them put in the call, I guess the service manager does work on Saturdays after all.

My baby goes in on Thursday for a complete acid wash and new Dura Sine waxing with no extra miles being put on for the extra travel to the dealer. I want to thank you all for the info that I got here, because they tried alot of the I can't imagine what would cause that crap, After I handed them the pictures from the thread post they changed there mind . Best of all I made them put in writting that if I had a rust problem after this was fixed it would be honoured by a full warrenty. I will let you know how my baby is doing when I get her back.
Thanks again
Lil

Great to hear the good news Lil. It's sad to see that you had to to do a little "barn burning" but if that is what it takes, that's what you gotta do. You know as well as I that these trucks cost a pretty penny. They should be made good for if there is a prob reguardless of what part of the truck needs the attention. Keep us posted on how you make out. I will do the same once I get the ball rolling. Good luck. Jake.

Didn't intend to minimize your problems. Your (and others) blistering (big blisters ) paint isn't likely to be from rail dust. Rail dust usually exhibits itself as a small "flake" of rust just at the top of the paint. Still, my point was/is that if your dealer won't do anything, it's because of the Ford corrosion warranty only covering "perforation".

Guys,
I have a 92 Grand Prix that is also white and when I bought the thing about two years ago the person I bought it from showed me the same things on the paint as all of you are describing. They are the color of rust, but they haven't gotten any bigger in fact after washing and waxing the car several times they mostly went away. I do drive my car in these salty Wisconsin winters so my F-150 doesn't get any salt on it, I love that truck!!

I washed my 2 week old 6.0L yesterday and some of these "rust spots" [very small] were in the bed but not anywhere else like I had on the 2001. I was at the Kentucky Truck Plant when this truck was made and it was shipped by motor convoy and not by rail so it can't be from train tracks, wheels, or brakes. The dealer body shop says it is from acid rain but I don't buy this either as they are only in the bed and nowhere else.

I have or had the dreaded rust bubbles. Two on the drivers side fender and two on the drivers side box. Notice I said had, because last week when I washed it all 4 spots blew off. You could see all the layers of paint and primer right down to a little rusty spot in the center.(the spots are about a 1/4" accross.) I went to the ford dealer and asked them to look at them. In april the front fender and box side are getting repainted under warranty, plus i'm getting a loaner car that i'm guessing will get 20+mpg.(=roadtrip)

there are some more pictures in my gallery

These rusty trucks. Are they Mexican built trucks or U.S.A. built? You can tell by the V.I.N.# if it starts with a 1 its U.S. built and if the VIN starts with a 2 its built in Mexico. They are having a lot of little problems with the Mexican built trucks. They also are making the diesel engine in Mexico (7.3 Iam not sure on the new 6.0) and they had a lot of problems with that too!! When I ordered my oo SD I told the dealer if it is going to be built in Mexico to forget it I didnt want it. They did not know where it was being built until they got the VIN#.
