I also have a gate from a 72 or earlier. It seems like the handle is different and the letters are a little different. On the 73 I am working on it has the Ford chrome overlay covering the FORD letters. Once the letters are covered are there any other differences beyond the handle.

The whole stamping is different aside from the way it mounts and fits. I can spot a 73-79 with a 67-72 tailgate from a mile away, see it all of the time. The lines will be off and the curves are different.
