Simple Electrical Question

Where is the negative battery cable supposed to connect? Mine is currently connected directly to the side of the engine block. I don't think it's original though because it looks like the hole on the cable has been drilled out so that the bolt will fit through it. It works this way, just curious where it really goes.

On the block or better yet on a starter mounting bolt.
Surfaces must be clean

Guess I'll leave it where it is unless I have reason to change it. Works fine, I just took it off the other day and noticed that the hole in the end of the cable had been drilled out so it got me to wondering.

I have bought new cables where the hole is to small and I drill them out rather than make another trip to get the correct one. Like you have been told, bolt to block ,then block to frame and frame to body to ground everything.
