BII reliability??

Hi all... I'm in the market for an older SUV to be used as a daily driver and possibly some fun, off-roading. I don't plan on modding anything for off-roading, but want to have a vehicle that will be fine snow, etc. I came upon a 1984 BII 4spd standard with OD with low mileage that looks like it's in great condition (haven't actually seen it yet but am hoping to see it today or this weekend). What should I look for here? Should I steer away from this? I don't have money to poor into something that needs work... sounds like the engine may be a crap shoot... I have a call into the guy to ask more questions - like size of engine. Anyway, thanks!

bII's are good rigs.. generally what you will run into is lifters ticking and oil leaks but bother are easy to fix and cheap

Thanks... I was getting paranoid about this ... so since this ad shows 1984 BII 4spd standard with OD - should I assume this is the automatic 4spd with Overdrive? I was hoping it was a 4sp manual...

that's what I was thinking...but my reading shows that the 4spd was the automatic... well, I guess I'll see when I take a look at it

Was the add on Craigslist?..........most folks on there cannot tell the difference between a manual and a automatic!
4 and 5spd manuals are stout and desirable, if its a automatic in a 84 its a C-5 (3spd with OD) not a good trans. has a weak reputation .........pass.

But as you said, if you dont plan on hardcore rackccrawling and no mods then that trans should do fine...just dont go adding 42" swampers with it

I have an 84 manual 4spd (no od). It's a great rig. Other than the tune up when I first got it and ticking lifters it's been pretty solid.
