ctubutis, 1986 F-150 4x4, 300 I-6, 4 Speed, SWB, Regular Cab, Base w/ carb. Correct, single midship 16 gallon tank.
Smashclash, where did you get yours? LMC seems to be the only place to get it unless another sending unit will fit that tank. I've seen several sending units for the 19 gallon tanks and 5.0 engines. Would that be the same? I have already purchased a new manual fuel pump.
Thanks for the info. Maybe that is why I'm a little confused. I may not be looking at the right thing. Below is what I ordered from Advanced Auto yesterday.
Spectra Premium Fuel Tank
Part No. F14B Warranty
Fuel Tank; 16 Gallon; Side Mount; Tank Dimensions: 42 3/8 x 14 3/8 x 11;Lock Ring Kit Included
My searches have included the specifics of the 16 gallon tank. I'll look again and search for 17 gallon midship tanks.
This looks to be E5TZ-9002-CObsolete
The parts catalog lists it as a 17 gal midship tank fitting 85/88 114" wheelbase trucks but
doesn't give any physical dimensions, sorry.
BTW Green Sales Co has ONE and CollectorsAutoSupply.com has 22.
Thanks for looking for me ctubutis. I have the 16 gallon from Advance Auto and I ordered the sender from LMC today so I'll let you know how they mate up. The manual fuel pump is also from Advance so hopefully next week, I'll be putting it together.
My truck is getting ready to become my daily driver so I have to get it back together soon. I sold my car this week so I could eliminate a payment and I'm going to deliver it next Tuesday so I'll have to get the truck running soon after. I'm excited because this gives me the ability to put more money towards fixing up the truck! Good stuff.
Alright, the old tank is off, the new tank is here, new sending unit is installed, and I'm ready to get it on the truck. One of the things I did was knock the rust off of the frame with a wire wheel brush and I've been thinking about the products like Rust Mort to put on the frame prior to re-installing the tank.
One question I have is where can I go and buy Rust Mort? Is it available at the part stores?
Another question, what is the better stuff to put on the metal to kill the rust?

can't help ya on where to get the rust mort stuff but when you're finished i would paint everything up with an undercoat paint. i highly recommend the duplicolor undercoat (blue rattle can) as it's good stuff. i would also paint the new fuel tank with the undercoat as well.
Roger that! I plan on painting the bottom of the cab with undercoat for sure. I'll call around tomorrow and see if I can find Rust Mort or one of the other products locally. I'm going to put everything back this Saturday and want to be able to get it all done in one day.

i'd try to paint the rust mort on this week then. you should really give that stuff 24 hours to dry before you top it with undercoat.
Never heard of Rust Mort and don't know what it is but I use Naval Jelly which is basically
phosphoric acid suspended in a gel, you brush it on and let it sit for a bit, I then use a wire
brush on the stuff to make sure it gets into all the crevices, then hose it off.
You can get it at Home Depot in the Paint Dept. for about $5.

I'd use the paint on stuff that turns rust into primer.
So here is where I am as of this afternoon. I drilled holes in the shock mounts so that water can get out just the same as SmashClash did. I used a wire wheel brush and a drill to get the rust off, then used a spray-on rust killer I picked up at NAPA. Once it dried, it dried black then I covered it with Rustoleum Gloss Black. I wanted to get it done prior to replacing the tank because that is something you won't remove to clean the frame later on.
I wish I would have had a picture of me at the finish because I was covered head to toe with rust dust and dirt! My wife had a good laugh when she got home from shopping today.
The first pic is after I pulled the interior out of it to clean everything and put back some carpet I picked up at the junk yard.
