'79 taillights problem

Hey folks, we're new here, got our first Ford truck a couple days ago. I grew up on classic cars, this is my first truck period. I love it. We're getting into home renos as a business and needed something that would do the job and that we could fix up into a sweet ride while doing it. Always loved the lines of the early F-150s, now we've got one. Stoked!

I was having some trouble rewiring the rear of the vehicle as the old wires were shot to heck. Most weren't working. The wiring diagrams are a lot more complicated than the 1965 charts I'm used to reading. Oh yeah, it's a 1979 this new one. Maybe some of you folks would know the answer to this:

I've got the parking lights hooked into the low intensity half of the two filament bulb. I've got the brakes/hazard circuit hooked to the higher intensity half of that bulb.

What I can't figure out is which to hook the turn signals into. When I hook one to the low intensity half, I get my all of my dash lights flashing (that ain't right, and turn signals are supposed to be bright anyway). When I hook it to the high intensity half all of the flasher lights, front and back, stop blinking when I press the brakes.

Is there a wire or a relay that I'm missing? I was just going from the wires that were already coming to the rear, and they look factory.

The hazzards will stop flashing when you step on the brake, it's designed that way.

If any of the existing wiring is still left...

Brown is running lights
Green is Left turn signal
Black/red is back-up
Yellow/Black is right turn signal

Thanks Josh, the turn signals shouldn't stop flashing though, right? I mean, front and back turn signals, all of it stops when I hit the brake..

Found Chilton's diagrams, will try those instead of the Ford. A bit easier to read.

No, the turn signals should continue to operate with brakes applied. The TSS takes care of that and the brake circuit runs thru the TSS.

TSS stands for Turn Signal Switch in case I am being presumptuous.

Along with what Bullit has said, I'll add the turn sig and brake use the same wire from the cab to the rear lights, it goes to the the bright filament of the taillight bulb. As said the turn sig switch makes the brake light on the selected side flash when the turn signal is applied. Did I make that as clear as mud? Sorry hard to explain and a little confusing for the un initiated.
Check that your grounds are clean and doing what they should.
All that being said, problems with the rear lights are common on the dents, many replace with available new bulb sockets from just about any parts store.
Good luck.
