Need a little guidance on my 6.0. Do the 4 bolts on the fan pulley stay in place until after you loosen the fan bolt? I am having a heck of a time loosening the fan bolt and did not want to break something when I bear down. LOL THANKS
What part are you attempting to replace? The fan clutch? If this is so, you remove the fan and stator assembly as one. There are four 15mm bolts that secure the stator to the engine in total (five on 2003 engines). Once you manage to remove the fan and stator assembly from the vehicle, then you remove all the fasteners securing the fan to the can clutch. The four bolts on the water pump do not need to be touched in any way, shape or form.
Thanks M-Chan68. I'm trying to R & R the water pump, I have a coolant leak. No leaks from hoses and front of engine is wet and dripping. Ex only has 218,xxx miles and the wp is the original. That fan bolt is tight tight.
Bump. Counter-clockwise is facing the engine from the front bumper correct??
That is correct. And for future reference, on any engine where the water pump spins in the opposite direction as the crankshaft, such as your 6.0L engine, the direction is always counter-clockwise. On a 6.4L diesel, 7.3L IDI diesel or 3.0L OHV V6 engine used on Rangers or Aerostars, the direction to loosen the fan clutch is clockwise because the water pump spins in the same direction as the engine crankshaft.
Good info Thanks. I was attempting to turn it in the correct direction. I
broke a 7/16 bar and difigured one of the holes trying to turn it with a 3 foot handle. Tomorrow I will try again. If at first you don't suceed..................... recomendations welcome!
I know I'm a pain but I still can't get this fan nut loose. I bought a Lisle tool and still can't move it. I used a piece of steel, drilled a hole, placed it on top of the Lisle connector tool and beat it with a 3 lb. hammer. No movement.
Please confirm again. I'm standing in front of the truck, facing the windshield, top view, the nut should loosen turning counter-clockwise, right to left, from driver's side to passenger's side. I don't know how else to say it. I tried bumping it to the right before turning it left to see if that would help. No go.
I sure need to get this done, so any help is greatly appreciated. PLEASE
Cheezit,
What air hammer are you using? I have a couple of mid line hammers, a DeVilbiss and a Campbell Hausfeld. They work fairly well cutting tailpipes, bolts and such. I'm thinking I need a heavy duty hammer. Your thoughts?? Should it be this tough to turn? Is there any other method?
Failing that, you may need to heat the hex portion of the fan clutch using a "flame wrench" (a. k. a. oxy-acetylene torch) WITH FINESSE.
Caution!: The fan clutch may require replacement after this procedure.
Caution!: When using an air hammer, be mindful that if or when the hex finally breaks loose, put every effort into NOT letting your hand slip. I just did last week and smashed my right hand knuckle. It is actually just beginning to heal as of this post. This is one of the reasons why I haven't been frequenting the forums that much this last couple of weeks, due to difficulty typing.
