The irratic shifting is the only complaint I have about my truck. Just feathering the gas in the first three gears....it doesn't seem to know what to do. It'll lurch forward, or downshift/upshift.

The lurching sure is annoying (normal mode) so I've recently been turning the TC off and I don't know if that actually helps this issue or if I "think" it helps. I'm going to keep doing this until I notice what is true.

If the gears are not displayed and you have to hit the + again to display them, then the flash has not been done. Simple test.

I tried the test today. Every time I start the truck and put it in gear the gear indicator shows up . I guess that tells me the flash update was installed at the factory, correct? The tranny seems to shift smoothly so I guess time will tell.

What are you actually turning off when you turn off the tc and what is the tc

I am guessing he turned off the traction control.

What you are describing is exactly what my Ford Escape would do BEFORE the firmware fix.

TC is traction control.
If you remember to turn it off most of the time, let me know if you notice a difference or if I'm just imagining that it helps. Like I said, I just started the experiment so I'm going to keep testing and most of my traveling this weekend was interstate so I had less stop/go driving.

During the summer I received a notification that my 2010 Escape needed to "have the firmware reprogrammed" to address shifting anomolies. I had noticed when the vehicle had a tendency to hunt for a gear or would upshift or downshift at strange times. After the firmware was updated, this 6 speed auto started to behave normally. I don't know what component has it's firmware upgraded.

I will see if I can find the email tomorrow that had the Ford notification of what was being done. The hunting thing you are describing is exactly what mine was doing. It was worse when cold.

I should add that I think my 2009 Escape was a 5 speed auto and the 2010 is a 6 speed.

Escape & Fusion Shifting Problems

Here is what was sent to me regarding shifting issues. It may not pertain to the issues you are dealing with. I believe the Escape has a new transmission this year:

Attention: Escape and Fusion Fleet Drivers
<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>
We have received notification from Ford Motor Company of a Service Action Program 10B15 issued for all 2010 Escape and Fusions. Fleet Administration requires that you take your 2010 Escape or Fusion to any Ford or Lincoln Mercury dealership so they can reprogram the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) to the latest calibration. This service must be performed on your fleet vehicle and will be at no cost to the company. This service should be performed at your next regularly scheduled 7500 mile service or no later than 30 days from today, whichever comes first.
<o></o>
Reason for this program: Transmission slips or harsh shifts. Continued driving with this condition may cause premature wear on the clutches, which could ultimately cause loss of transmission function.
<o></o>
When you make your appointment with the dealership, please be sure to advise them that you want the Customer Satisfaction Program 10B15 performed on your vehicle. Print out the attached Service Action notice and take with you to the dealership

Ford never made a 5-speed auto FWD transmission. The 2008 Escape had a CD4E 4-speed unit, and the 2009 has a 6F35 6-speed transmission. Which happens to be the same transmission your 2010 has.

The flash fixed my tranny shifting issues completely, however, my mileage has gone down about .8 to 1.2 mpg average. My cousin's truck did the same thing after his flash as well. Deja Vu???? Every time they flashed my 6.0 the folks at Chevron and Exxon would send me a thank you card because they knew I would be buying more diesel. No other issues that I can see or feel. I think there is a noise that is louder now when I back off the accelerator a little at low speeds. Could that be the turbo waste gate opening I'm hearing? And as was mentioned in another thread, I have the "click" noises that come from under the hood at random intervals after the truck is turned off.

I had the click noises after an oil change and now that you mention it, I have not heard it clicking for awhile now (age on the oil). Others said this will happen.
I didn't drop or gain MPG after the flash and mostly resolved the strange transmission shifting.

I have noticed my engine is louder (I have had people riding with me say this too) and I can hear the turbo spool up in the morning a few seconds after starting. This isn't something I noticed the first 5,000 miles (now around 7,500).
I have gone through a few drive thru's recently and I have had to repeat myself (unlike when I first got it) so there is my baseline.

Darn, my diesel is louder and I have a harder time using a drive-thru like Ford said; I should return it! lol.
Anyways, I like it! Not to loud, not to quiet. It's a diesel and it's still quieter than the 6.4L with RPMs.
