Well 2 weeks ago i bought my first truck. I found what i consider a good deal on a 96 F250 4x4 single cab long bed diesel. So far im happy with my purchase. Ive already dug into the truck fixing all the issues it had. When i bought it he said it need glow plugs, vacuum pump, and a valve cover gasket. Monday I tore into it and did the valve cover gasket/harness/glow plugs in about 2 and half hours. Unfortunatly when i was pulling the intake apart i found out the turbo intake hose was rotted. Ive ordered a replacement and bought all the parts for a 6637 intake from work. I still need to splice on of the harness pigtails since it was melted and i once i found the rotted hose i lost motivation to finish so i said **** doing the vacuum pump.
so heres some pics of the new to me beast. These are some i took of it when i found it for sale.
Im working on a shopping list for this truck already. and i have even driven it 100 miles.
Just got a chance to use the truck and my new tent last night.
My buddy had a bonfire at his parents farm. So I took the truck out.
The truck seems to have a miss. The night I finished the glow plug install, it started and sounded great. Now its smoking and running rough like a cylinder isnt firing. The truck ran smoothly before I did the plugs, it just didnt like starting on its own.
So whats my best way to trouble shoot this? My buddys code scanner wouldnt talk to the truck. So im a little unsure about what to do besides pulling it back apart and recheck what i did.
You can try to track down the miss by unplugging the valve cover plugs one at a time while it's running.
If one doesn't change the idle as much or at all then that will narrow it down to those two injectors. It could be a bad connection, or bad harness. You replaced the VC gasket and one of the external plugs. Check the other plugs for burned pins, or it could be a bad harness under the valve cover.
Could be injector o-rings also but kinda strange that it would just start after you did the gp's.
Good one Rick, I heard that one before. I was stranded in ND and was asking questions here. After being told to look for burnt pins I reported back and said I didn't have any. A guy, maybe you, said LOOK AGAIN!! This time I took a magifine glass and sure enough, I found a burnt pin. So, Steve, they are hard to see, LOOK AGAIN!!
Had to replace two of my external plugs, the other two are still good except the little latch pieces that snap on are broken so I just had to press them in there as far as I could. So far so good, but should replace those too.
