I have a 2004 Navigator 4x4 with the tow package and a trailer brake. I currently have an 18' open trailer that I tow a 97 Viper with. I am looking to go with an enclosed trailer and just curious what size I could get.
I am pretty sure that it would pull a 24" fine. That would be great for just the car. If I got a 28' then I should be able to get the car and a 4 wheeler in there. That is really the goal. I am not sure what the weight of the trailer is when they are empty.
You really need at least a 3/4 ton truck, preferably a turbo diesel, to pull the 28 foot with a car and 4-wheeler. That combo is going to be 8500-10,000 lbs easy. This is beyond what the Expedition is rated for by enough that I wouldn't do it.
The 24 foot enclosed car hauler is going to be at least 3000 lbs empty plus the car, spares and tools is going to put you close to the max rating of the Expy. I agree with you, it will probably haul that much just fine.
used my wife's '04 expy to pull our 24ft enclosed with my quad, 4 dirtbikes, gear, and the front living quarters with 7 of us in the truck a few weeks ago, was my first pull with it.
Towing is serious business, requiring careful preparation to be safe.
The rated "towing capacity" weight includes trailer & cargo, plus any passengers, luggage, etc.
You are likely to see people towing all sorts of trailers with undersized vehicles and inadequate hook-ups... but what happens in any sort of emergency?
One of my friends did a lot of research on this a couple of years ago. His conclusion was that a 3/4 ton truck is the minimum for hauling much of an enclosed car trailer.
Best of luck to you.
