AM Radio static

My recently purchased 89 F-SuperDuty still has the factory AM/FM radio and the FM works fine but the AM has static. There's very little at idle but as the RPM increases it gets to the point that I can't hear the radio- only the static. Since there are no spark plugs what else could it be- the alternator? Is there a resistor or capacitor in the electrical system?

You would think it would have to be the alternator. You could try fitting a braided ground wire from radio casing to truck body (dash frame). You could also try a 1mf capacitor from alternator casing to main alternator wire.

Yes alternator. Check all your connections, mainly grounds even at the battery. Also check to see if the capacitor (filter) is still connected near the voltage regulator. If nothing else works, it may have a bad diode trio in the alternator itself.

Capacitor/Filter

If it's going along with your RPMs, this is your problem.
