coolant pukes...from filter system??
degas bottle is at min line on the corrected tank sticker that shows the min level.
69cj, Ford would agree with you. I did everything to try and be pro-active and prevent any issues from arising later. Not to drive it hard or rat-bag it. But yes, Ford could try and claim the tuner is the cause. Not sure what excuse they'd offer to all the others such as BPofMD that ran a stock truck and had problems. I've read tons of posts from those folks too. So after all the things I've read on these forums, i thought everything i did would help prevent problems.
I'm not trying to knock the Ford 6.0L. My cousins stock '04 (except for straight piping the 3" facotry exhaust) has awesome towing power. he had a couple of turbo issues early on, but otherwise great truck.
So after the recent mods (filter system), I got a few coolant pukes. ALWAYS at the coolant cap. So Ford pressure tested it and said it was the cap. I had just replaced it with a new Ford one, but i did it again. And I seemed good for a short while, then it happens again. So instead of donating another $110 to Ford, i bought a new Ford degas bottle (coolant resevoir??). Still pukes. So I put on a Napa cap. The Napa cap doesn't have the postive stop where the cap still spins but doesn't tighten any further. So I just hand tightened snug-to-tight. Still pukes.
So I'm talking to a good friend who is a mechanic but not a diesel specialist. He asked why I bothered with filtration system and he thinks it's a waste and may be source of my issues. He also said it's more work for the water pump. I told him the theories on the sand from casting, etc,, and he raised an eyebrow and said no other diesels use them or need them.
I have no performance issues, other than I sometimes experience a jerking/lugging sensation when I'm loaded and pull hills, and my tranny hasn't kicked down to a lower gear. So if it tries to stay in higher gear and revs lower, it feels jerky, like we're being tugged. The moment it kicks down, that sensation goes away. I leave the auto tranny in tow haul and don't play with it manually, but if I was controlling it, I'd kick it down ealier than it seems to do on its own.
Anyways, does anyone else think the filtration system might cause or contribute to coolant pukes? I've replaced 2 filters inside of 5,000 miles, cut them open and they look clean to me.
THANKS for your feedback.

How many miles since the EGR delete did it start puking?
You’ve done as much as you can easily do to put the EGR back to before puke condition.

How many miles since the SCT install?
Innovative Diesel does excellent work, but you might consider taking the tuner off and going back to the stock tune.<O

How many miles since coolant filter install did it start puking? 5K+ miles
No comment about your gas mechanic.
BUT you’re focused on the coolant filter so TAKE it off.
A trip to the hardware store for a couple of brass couplers, 4 clamps and 30 minutes will put it back to before puke condition.

How many miles since the studs were installed?
After you’ve put the truck back to before puke condition and it still pukes take it back to the stud installer and have it checked.

Hope this helps.

Headstuds were done maybe 5-10K miles BEFORE any of that, and there never seemed to be an issue with them. At that time i ran the Edge at level 2 when I towed, and level 1 econo when empty.
I think I will try a few things. I will start with Ford cap again, and also bypass the filter...see what happens.
If I keep spewing, then I'll go back to stock tune and re-assess after that.
It's way too much work to touch the EGR delete set up, so that would be the last thing i'll look at.
It's weird because other than smelling the puked coolant and seeing the mess, it runs great, good power, tows well. IF I have bigger issues with head gasket, I thought I'd see more performance issues.
