7.3 diesel help please

I have a 2001 2WD X with the 7.3L diesel. I just installed an AFE 2nd stage air intake and a MBRP 4" exhaust and followed that up with a TS Performance chip.

When I was testing everything I noticed an unussual noise when the X changed gears. It sounded like air blowing out of a hose under the hood. I got a friend of mine, who is good with diesels, to ride with me and we both think that it is a hose leak. The hose, we think, is the one that is on the passenger side (nest to the battery) and runs from just behind the grill, below the radiator, and back to another conection just behind the radiator.

I was wondering if anyone can tell me what this hose is called so I do not sound stupid when I look for one? I was also wondering if anyone knows how to change this hose or if anyone can send me a link to show me how to change it? I am new to the 7.3L and am trying to learn as much as I can so I can do some of the work myself.

My friend could not remember the exact name for it and had to go out of town this morning so I thought I would turn to the trusted diesel heads here who have been helpful in the past.

Thank you very much for any help!

It's your wastegate opening up and letting excess turbo pressure by. You're hearing it more due to the open air filter.

You're probably just hearing your turbo breath bro, like locknload stated.

It's common for people to get concerned when they switch to an open air filter because they've never heard the "breathing" noise before.

I have the AFE Stage 2 on my Ex and when my wife first heard it, she freaking loved it.

Also, since you're new to the 7.3's, check out the 7.3L forum and poke around in the threads there. You'll learn a lot.

Yes and if you tow anything (heavy), get ready for the dreaded surge!

I've got a 6637 air filter installed on mine and it does the same thing. After 2 years, I'm used to it.

Does the lower intake air restriction cause this or does it make you more aware of it since you can hear it better?

I'm going to say the latter. Because it was always there, you just couldn't hear it. Which is why the "fix" is to install a WW or the different compressor housing. One of which is on my list of to-do's; if I dont just upgrade the turbo while I'm at it.

I think it has more to with the chip. With the increased HP comes an increased demand from the engine. The turbo's inlet size can't keep up with the engines new demand and provide the additional air needed. Because of this, the impeller distorts from the extra air being drawn through the stock sized inlet, hence, Turbo surge.
The wicked wheel helps because every other blade is a little shorter, this lets some of the incoming air bypass and reduces the strain on the wheel. The ported housing works as a better bypass for the additional a incoming air.

This is how I understand it anyway.

just air coming back out the turbo as the demand for boost is instantly reduced to almost nothing and all the built up air has to go somewhere and back towards the filter is where it goes. the ats housing will eliminate that altogether........
