So this isnt for my explorer, its for a friends car. to be specific its a dodge/chrysler intrepid, 97 with 3.5 engine.
It died on him. after listening to the fuel pump, i noticed it wasnt making any noise at all when they key was turned like it should be. ordered a new one and i just got done replacing it. Still no start, still no noise form the pump when the key is turned. What else could it be? we swapped the pump relay with another relay that was the same from the windshield wiper, still no luck.
WHAT COULD IT BE?! i need to work on my car before the cold comes, i need to replace the water pump gasket, but i wanna get his wheels back, so he can actually transport himself
You didn't mention if you checked for electrical power to the pump at the plug in for the pump. If there is power you should start looking for a bad ground. Also check for chewed wires as this is the time of year when squirrels really start eating anything.
Chrysler also liked to use a Auto Shut Down (ASD) relay. I think this relay served a similar function to the inertia fuel pump switch in Fords. If you find you are not getting power to the fuel pump, start tracing backwards until you find a place you have power in but not out.
You might be able to get a free wiring diagram of the fuel pump circuit from the Repair Information section on Autozone's website. Registration is free.
Yup, a multimeter is your friend. Just test for power before and after each major component. The one that gets power but doesn't let any pass through is probably faulty. Remember relays need two sources of power, they need batter power and trigger power, otherwise they won't turn on.
