Yesterday I was looking for a head ID on a 1954 Mercury 256, EBY block. There was very little grime and dirt, and intake manifold was off. Looked all over the exterior of both heads and only found 6bv, in small lettering. The ID must be either under the valve covers, or on the block side of the head.
The head is probably of the design which has a contour shrouding the valves kind of like half moons, with 1.78 intakes. The actual ID is somewhat academic, unless a person is searching for a replacement for a damaged head.
i found ECZ-G on the corner of the head. the rocker valley has a B 9 6090 DIF 5 G THE UNDER SIDE HAS A BIG G ON ONE END AND A 8 ON THE OTHER END the 6BV ON THE EXAUST PORT IS A MYSTERY TO ME . IT HAS A TAG LOOKING STAMPED WITH 2 SLOT LOOKING SCREW AT EACH END OF THE "TAG'

Well lucky you! Sounds like a 1957 G head. The 6BV essentially is meaningless. ECZ-G is not meaningless, and also not academic.
