Just Pondering...

Was there a kind of defect in the firewalls of the 86-87 f250s that made it weak where the clutch master cylinder mounts? my 87 7.3 did that to me before it died, among other things (negligence/cavitation is a bad thing).

yes there was.at least on the 7th gen trucks (80-86) im not sure if 8th gens had this trouble,not that i know of.
what people did was made a custom plate to stiffen the firewall up like it should have been.

Ford doesn't make the big or small kits anymore and most dealers are out of them. If you can't find one go to Oilburners.com and send a pM to Freebird01 as he's making them now.

It wasn't really a defect. When ford came out with the diesel in 83 it used a lot stronger clutch, so they used a hydraulic setup so it wouldn't be near as hard to push, they just didn't think about that energy had to go somewhere.

You can make your own reinforcement plate. I have done many of them way before I even knew ford offered one.

Just to clarify a bit, Freebird01 is not making the factory-style repair/reinforcing plates, IIRC he came up with his own design that is stronger than the factory stuff.

My 1990 F250 came with that firewall plate from factory.

I will have to keep Freebird01 in mind for when I do my cab swap, I will need one.
