ball joints w/out compressor?

Hi All,

I'm setting up for BJ replacement on my truck (sig), I've had the front end down to the knucle's already (needle bearing service). So my only question is can I handle the Ball Joints without a compressor? I can probably borrow if I had to but was wondering if it 's that much more difficult without air tools?

I didn't want to post this in the ball joint thread as it's getting long...

Thanks,

Lou

It can be done without air tools, with the proper length cheater bar.
Be prepared for a real workout, though.

I have a 10hp 60 gallon upright.
And all I used it for when I changed the ball joints was removing the wheels.

I found that the use of air tools made getting the ball joint pressed out & in much easier!

That's the only part I'm worried about is pressing them in & out, without the compressor.

Thanks for the replies...

It's much easier to use an impact wrench to press the ball joints out. You can do it without, but you have a decent wrestling match ahead of you.

thanks again for the replies. hopefully going to tackle this in another week or two... Autozone has the press as a loaner, hope if fits.

When I did mine we used a small portable 8 gallon 110v air compressor and did not use a press. The axle seals were a pain. I used pictures from this site that were a great help. The pics were in the ball joint thread which you probably saw. We replaced a wheel bearing assembly that I purchased at Oreilys which came with the wheel studs but not the 4 bolt/studs that hold it on. We got them out but it was not pretty.

You could do it if you had a very strong bench vise (to hold the BJ tool/knuckle) and a long cheater bar. I'd go down to harbor freight and get a really cheap electric impact if you can swing it. I think it would work out a lot better.

Also, regarding the ball joint tool, I'd try to rent one from some place else other than Auto Zone. The AZ kit I received wouldn't actually fit the ball joints on the super duty. I had to cut the bolts off the top of the joint, and shove some bolts under the cup to allow it to fully extract the ball joint.
