Its the same universal part, one has ACDelco stamped on it and the other Duralast.
The ford part if i remember correctly is about $170.
If you decide on getting the ford part - its likely that one of the 25 year old nylon lines will split on you and you'd wish you went with the aftermarket one.
Have you even verified that the valve is your problem? When you switch from one tank to
the other, the engine runs for a short while and then dies, switching back to the other tank
allows the engine to run again, this sounds to me like the valve is, in fact, switching tanks,
but there is nothing in that second tank pumping fuel to the engine.
Do you have an ohm meter? If so, disconnect the wiring at the suspect tank, attach one
probe to the terminal feeding the pump and the other to ground and see if you have
continuity or not. A reading of 0 ohms shows a burned-out pump.
You might also be able to use your ears - turn the ignition switch to RUN, can you hear any
electric tank pumps?
There is also the wiring - connections get corroded, previous owners hack up the wiring,
etc. etc. It could also be that the valve *is* at fault and isn't fully switching from one tank
to another. It could also be a clogged filter or crushed fuel line or dry-rotted rubber fuel
line or.......
I just hate to see you spend time, money & effort throwing parts at it based only on talk
about what the problem could be.
You make a valid point, I have not in fact actually trouble shot the valve to ensure that it is in fact faulty, I need to get under it and see if I can hear the pumps coming on, as far as for the fuse panel, I actually have nothing to go by in the way of a fuse designation, the cover on the panel under the driver side was gone when I got the truck, and my Chilton manual if thats what you want to call it does not show the 86 fuse panel, it stops at 85, you would think they would be the same but mine looks physically different than the picture shown in the chilton manual. And I am unaware of any other power distribution panels in the truck. I need to check the pump on the front tank before I do anything rash like buy parts I am not needing, I was more looking for a head start, like if there was a part more prone to failure than others, thats why I went straight to the valve because I had heard they were a problem child on these trucks. If anyone has a fuse designation for my model truck I would love to get a copy of it, and if anyone knows of another distribution panel I would like to know that as well. I am just trying to get this thing up and everything working properly, and I am so close its not even funny, I need to change the rear main seal and oil pan gasket and all my oil leaks are solved,, this fuel issue and this thing is all working the way it was when it was sold new. Of course I still have front end work to do, it was neglected over the last 25 years as well, but you get my point. I have always loved these body style trucks since I was little and I finally got one and I am getting to learn all about it in the process. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks again guys
Thanks for the diagram, I'll print this out and keep in the truck, its nice to see what goes where, I see the fuse for the aux. tank selector and I had checked them all just about an hour ago or so and I specifically remember that one being good, but I think I am going to make sure I have power to the fuse and past it, start chasing out the problem, I am still leaning toward the selector valve but I will let everyone know what I come up with, thanks for jumping in there and really helping me out with this problem, I am sure there will be more to come. Thanks again guys. I really appreciate it.

DO NOT buy that valve from O-rielly or Auto Zone!!! Go to the dealer... They are very reasonable on that part... I paid $80 for mine and it's a genuine Ford part...
Does anyone know if the fuel tank selector valve from a 1997 Ford F250 with a 460 is the same as on my 1986? I know the other truck is fuel injected, here's the deal, I have a friend parting out a 97 model and he was able to use both tanks just fine, I checked price at the dealer and the part for my truck is $227, which I believe I was warned before about the OEM price earlier. I just thought if the part was the same I could get it off his truck and he wont charge me much for it. Thanks guys
The selector valve is not the same on a fuellie gasser, the later trucks don't even use separate valve like you're working with. However, one from a diesel will work, not sure about 94+, I'd have to take a look under my 96, but, I know the selector on my 86 460 truck came off of a 1993 7.3 IDI, and the one on my 86 IDI is exactly the same.
