It ain't the purchase cost, it's the operating costs that get you - insurance and registration in particular, as many states will require you to register the truck as a commercial vehicle even if you do not own a business, and therefore you need commercial insurance on it which can be quite ridiculous depending on where you live.

Have an update: I plan on painting, so prep begins!
The bed is off of the truck thanks to some family and a friend. I also started some scrubbing on the frame. There is hope behind the dirt... and a little surface rust.
