im new to the site so im sorry if this is in the wrong place but i really need some help. my 97 expeditions 4x4 wont engage. the dash lights come on but the tranny wont shift into any 4x4 setting. it worked fine 2 weeks ago now nthing. i've checked both fuses and they are fine. thanks for any help.
Get the truck off the ground using jackstands and have someone engage 4WD for you while you feel the motor on the transfercase. If you feel it working the motor is good.
Check that and let us know.

I can't say I'd be too comfortable getting under an Expedition that's up on jackstands with not only the engine running but potentially all 4 wheels spinning.
It's a lot safer to remove the 3 bolts holding the shift motor on, dropping it down and then seeing if it moves when switching in and out of 4WD (key on).
That works too. With all 4 off the ground with the truck on GOOD jack stands you would be able to see more than just the motor operate. The motor may be good but there could be another issue that could be identified while the truck is in the air. Such as vacuum lines that are disconnected or broken. A frame lift is, of course, the best way to go but most of us do not have one at home. I hope to soon.
That is a strong possibility since there is a vacuum actuator on the front differential that moves a lever to lock the front ring gear and axle together when in 4WD.
