Has any one swapped flathead b8 to a 300 six? I was looking at the mods it seems I could do it less$$ with the 300 verses flat head, dont get me wrong I love the flathead it will take a lot more $$ to build the flathead than the 6 .I want also dependable with a little go go. 51 f1 truck. Also a t5 trans with a 8 or 9 inch rear.thanks George
I seem to remember a guy on here tried that swap and decided against it, I remember he said the 300 is just a bit too long. He settled on a 200 inline 6 from a car, and he seemed pretty happy with it. It got some incredibly good mileage, 30 mpg on the freeway! Sorry, but I can't remember where it was on here, you might try posting this in the 48-60 truck forums.
Thanks Rusty,
I might have to go that route. I did see on another ford site where a fella did a swap with the 300.I have not pm him yet,on the post he said he had to move the radiator forward. The 300 is about 3 ft long from bell housing to front pulley.that will put the motor right in front of radiator.i am not sure really what I want to do.i even thought about a v6.I thought it might be pretty cool, keep digging around. thanks George
You are right,a v8 would not molest the front the six sits high not much clearance. the more I thought about it nice little 302 would be sweet. For now I want to get the old girl on the road with the flathead. I found the problem today about the knock.I think what got me thinking was when I had to order belts I couldnt go to Napa and pick some up.I had to order them also thermostat order. Wow I been out of building a nice ride to long.
But hey nothing like getting a little grease under the nails. This truck sat for 20 some years and i got her cranked. thanks for your incouragement
(cant spell) George
I was thinking maybe a 351W, not the 302. The 302 won't get as much low-end grunt (drivability) as the I6-300, and a 351W would be better at that. I think you have the room for the deck-height
