what to do?????????
I wanted to make it a 410cid, but I am having a lot of trouble finding parts that I can afford.
I will be using the truck as a daily driver but I want a lot of pep to show the local kids that big cubes are better than them little pocket rockets they drive. I will haul farm stuff probably 25% of the time.
My question is what would be the best in your opinion as far as power and reliability?
I have the trans done, its a C6 with shift kit and external cooler. All opinions are welcome. Im just looking for options at this time because it looks like the kit for 360CID to 410CID is going to cost about $1900, and thats just the crank, rods, and bearing the best I could tell.
1. Bothered Ratsmoker to death about what parts are good to get me to the proper HP and Torque spot.
2. Went to a bone yard and got an old 390 engine (this is where I get the rods and crank from for the 390).
3. Paid a guy who builds race engines $800 to do the labor of boring the cylinders, tearing down and rebuilding engine, work the heads, and etc.
4. Right now, after all the parts, my budget it at about $1300 for the parts and still $800 left for the labor, so that's about $2100. Before I am finished, I will probably spend somewhere around $2800 to hae someone install the engine, break it in and put all new stuff on the outside of the engine (water pump, fuel pump, alternator, etc.).
Don't know if this helps you but that's what I am doing. Wish I could find someone who could help me install the engine for free, the budget is hurting and has forced me into the unforgiveable credit purchase mode.
this is going to be work I understand and cost Ican deal with that but there has to be a way to not spend so much and still get awsome power. But maybe Ill have to find someone that can put up with me buggin them for answers like you did.
7year 70k mile warranty
They have other engines too. How bout a 460ci? mauahahahh
Talk about cubes...
Rods can come from a 390, and you just need to order 390 pistons for a `73 or newer truck with 390 (hint; they used 410 pistons to lower compression!) 390 rods aren't that expensive, and are the same rods used in 410's and non-performance 428's. As a side note, they will work fine for most street/strip duty, being forged just like all other FE rods.
The only real difficult part is coming up with the 410/428 crank and flywheel or flexplate (manual or automatic trans; a must, as the 410/428 crank is balanced externally, with a counterwieght. 360/390's are balanced internally).
Like I said, you're still going to pay a lot of money to have the engine rebuilt, if you rebuild it right. But it wont be that much more to find the right crank. They can be had for around $400 and change, usually.
