removing front clip

I am in the process of putting the front clip back together on my '72 after having removed it piece by piece. Now that I have gone through this I am wondering how hard it would be to remove it as a complete unit, including the hood and radiator. Has anyone done this? How hard is it to get everything back in place and lined up after? How heavy would that whole unit be?

If you were to remove the whole clip how would you get to the bolts holding everything to the cab? The front isn't too bad just the rad support. The whole clip would twist once removed I imagine. If this is something you really want to do look into a fiberglass front clip, they are pricey but figuring out how to make the original work would be too.

It would be easy. I have mine apart right now. It would be best to have an "A" frame hoist but, 4 people could lift it off. One at each fender well and 2 in the front. There are only 8 bolts holding the clip on and all can be reached without much trouble. Two long 7/16 bolts hold the Radiator support to the frame, then there are 3 on each fender's rear. That's it. The hardest one's to get at are the one's behind the top door hinge but a ratchet works fine it's just alittle slow.

The wiring is really the only issue. I put a plug into the wiring that is on top of each fender well that goes to each head light assembly.

If you leave the hood attached you don't have much of a flex problem at the top. Just take your time and don't forget to remove the heavy battery. Ha!

Good luck,

Yeah, having taken it apart piece by piece I don't think it would be that hard. The weight is the biggest problem. If a guy were to install a multi point plug for the wiring at the fire wall then the wiring wouldn't be a problem.

It sure makes it handy for doing engine work with the clip off and it seem like I am always tinkering with the motor. Although with the 302 I have enough room that I can climb in and stand by the motor to work on it. That's one of the reasons I haven't gone to power steering.

The wiring should unplug right inside the cab. 3 color coded plugs if I remember correctly. Have fun lining it all back up. Mines still not right.
