I have 1997 XLT with the 4.6 liter engine. The engine would always ping under stress even when relatively new and now it is getting worse. I have 49K miles. Any suggestions?
Sounds like the fuel that you are using now, is of poorer quality than when you bought the truck. Fill up with whatever fuel you plan to use through the winter. Most refiners are on their winter run of fuels. Yes, they do refine gasoline differently in winter than summer. Winter gasoline has more butane in it, hence a higher vapor pressure. Disconnect the positive battery cable, prefferably overnite. Reconnect the battery cable in the morning and proceed to re-break-in your ecu. The ecu should somewhat reprogram itself for the fuel that you have in the vehicle. The ecu will only change so much with its' capabilities. It should readjust the timing a small bit, maybe enough to stop the pinging. If not, you may have to try mid-grade fuel.

My reply is not so technical. Just this week I noticed "pinging" under even modest load. I figured I got some bad gas, but I'd been running the same tank-full for quite a while. Most of my driving is stop & go city stuff.
Anyway, I tried what I've used on cars before and it cleared it up for now. I just found an open stretch of road and did a few full-throttle runs from 30 to 60 mph (using the gear selector to hold revs above 3500). Total time about 2 minutes of this and ping is gone. In the vocabular of some old-timers, sometimes you just need to "blow 'er out!".
