My brother has a 1993 F250 4x4 with the 5.8L, 5 spd and 4.10 gears but the 1/2 ton axles and he gets about 14-15 empty. I get 12 - 13 empty and I have the 1 ton axles. Loaded, his mileage drops significantly while mine drops just a little. It depends on what application you are talking about. Towing 3-4k lbs should remain about the same, but if you get up to 5k + lbs, the 5.8L will probably get worse mileage from my experiences. If you are not towing, the 5.8L will get slightly better.
