Bought my first old Ford today, Although I have owned a lot of old Fords, I have always bought them new.
I picked up a 1960 F-100 with the 6cly 4 on the floor, with syncro 2,3 & 4th.
Everything works, but the rear brakes are locked up, will back up, but real tight
going forward. I picked up new Wheel Cylinders, Shoes and Spring Kit and will
replace all before driving it home.
The only rust is the Door Steps are gone (can see the road) in some places.
How hard is this to replace? I have some welding experience or should this be
a body shop job.
Thanks
Craig

It's quite possible that your e-brake cables are stuck...if you can back up but can't go forward.
Dont' know the 1960 but replacing the floor sections should be fairly easy; would likely be 90 bends etc ? limited welding experience should be sufficient. I replaced the whole floor in mine, no welding experience.
Mind you I haven't actally driven done the road yet !
you have now entered yet another phase of your addiction . there is no known cure and you will never be able to get enough old fords , so the habit will eventually increase tenfold ................. all of the members please now kneel and pray for brother cbutcher and that his disease spreads quickly and that he may join the rest of us in ford bliss ................
Hey Dude, welcome and like mervy said, I would check the e-brake cables first, good possibility that is all that is wrong. Gee 55 f350, you gonna scare butcher to death and we will have to wait till we meet in old ford truck heaven to ever meet the guy, Garry
Guys this is a treatment, I am trying to recover from an addiction to Antique Outboard Motors by working on my new F100.
Went and got the truck today (90 miles one way), Put new wheel cylinders in to get the brakes to work, E-cable was free and not binding. I bought shoes for the rear, but they where to small, the PO told me that he had switched out the rear end for a 3/4 ton unit, would this be why the shoes did not fit? The old shoes had Rays???? something 10140L on the shoe.
Drove it home, 90 miles at 50 mph on the 101 freeway, never used my brakes till I exited the freeway, Sure where a lot of people waving at me as they passed by me.
Must have liked the neat truck. They were telling me it was one great truck.
What a great way to travel, have to go get something for my sore face, been smiling so much it hurts.
Thanks everyone for your advice and encouragement.
Craig
A 3/4 ton rear end would have 8 bolt wheels unless they changed the axles to a 5 lug, but that would seem unlikely. If the axle is from a different vintage, that may mean the brake shoes would need to be different.
