Shudder on take off

I'm posting for my brother who just bought a 2001 F350 CC Long bed, 7.3 of course. He has only had the truck a couple months and now he says he has a slight shudder when he starts off from a stop. We thought at first it was maybe something loose in the drive train. We replaced the carrier bearing and that didn't do it. It almost feels like when you are letting off the clutch petal on a manual tranny and you get that kind of hopping motion. It doesn't do it in reverse, it doesn't do it in any other gear. It sure feels like a clutch type of thing. You think its the torque converter?

You may want to drain the rear differntial and go back with synthetic and some friction modifier. Most synthetic has in in there so you can run it first to see if you need it.Napa sells it as well.

you know what, I didn't even think of that. I'll do that this weekend. Its got 100,000 miles on it and the fluid probably needs to be changed.

Also, check the driveshaft connection at the rear most shaft to the intermediate. The slip joint needs to be greased with a special teflon grease motorcraft XG-8. I have tried other greases and those don't work...

Mine does it when i have my air bags pumped up to high when hauling the 5th wheel. I believe it has to do with the drive angle of the drive shaft. It will shake when i first put my foot into it from a take off. If i let out the bag pressure and the rear sags a bit it goes away. Does his truck have a lift? Might need a carrier bearing shim possibly.. Just a thought. I thought the shudder when turning would point towards a rear diff oil issues/slip modifier, not taking off straight. From what i understand.

Mine does it also

I have the same problem, I can put it in 2 on selector and it doesn't do it. Could it be tranny? I have changed fluid and filter. I changed grease in diff. no change to problem.

Sounds like high driveline angle to me as well.

Mine also has a slight shudder at take off, but it has bone stock suspension. It's minor enough that nobody else notices it but me, only at part throttle, and it has not gotten any worse, so I let it go. FWIW it does not feel like it's coming from the rear end. Feels like the vibe originates at the tranny. But my tranny may not be a good example. It's a boneyard part installed for PO, and soon after getting the truck I semi-smoked it towing in Idaho (flashing OD, burnt fluid with pretty glittery flakes) so it would be no surprise if something is amiss down there. I've got about 10k since the FTVB, cooler and flush n fill and no problems aside from the shudder. Well, reverse engages slower than the Democratics figuring out what the election means, but reverse gear is slow for all 4R100 it seems. I do not recall if the shudder pre-dates the trouble in Idaho. We just go the thing and hit the road.

Bottom line is I think the shudder is in the tranny, and normal. You could try synthetic fluid, might help. I bet Mark K covered this a few times, search around...

I had the same problem with my F550. It would shudder when coming to a stop and when starting out from a stop.
I replaced all the U-joints and the carrier bearing. I also replaced the transmission with an ATS Stage II transmission, (something I wanted to do anyway), checked the rear-end fluid. None of these changes got rid of the shudder.
Like Camodown, I greased the slip joint and that solved the issue. No more shudder.

Humm.. Maintenance of the slip joint for me next, when i get it out of storage. Confused on why a slip joint would cause the vibration but i if it works i will accept it.

I never had a vibration. Added air bags and got it. The only thing that changed was my ride height. When i get the camper out i am going to try to not pump up air bags so much to cut down on my ride height when i have the camper on and try that as well.

Slip joint for sure! I replaced carrier bearing, u-joints and even shimmed the drive line when I first ran across this problem. Nothing got rid of it. Then i pulled the drive line, used some of that grease gun in a can, and the problem went away. It has been almost six years and it is about time to do it again.

Mine does the shutter as well. It did it before I put the 6" lift on, and it does it now, as well. I've gone thru several tranny's thru the years, and it's never changed, it still shutters when I take off. Again, I know it's not my tranny, as I now have a full custom HD built tranny. From what I can tell, and the only 2 things I haven't tried, is Greasing the slip joint, and what I believe to be the problem is the Clutches in the LS axle. Plenty of us here have had problems with the LS axle, from the Shutter, to where the limited Slip is non existent. I've done plenty of power brake launches, where I can see that only the RT rear is spinning, and the Lt rear just sits there do'n noth'n. When I changed the gear lube out, it helped the LS to where it engages pretty much all the time now. But, The clutches in the Factory LS axle are a really week design. I'd bet that your shutter problems are there. Hopefully, if I find time this weekend I'm gonna grease my Axle spline, see if this does it. Empire tech resolved his problem with this. Let see what happens in my case. It is the easiest to fix of the 2. Good luck, and hope this helps yah some what.

Just remember to mark the driveshaft before you remove it and put it back the same, for balance reasons.

Definitely remember to do this. Take some metal chalk and run a line down it, or something like that.

there was a Factory TSB yrs ago about clunk/shudder on take off. the fix was to grease the slip joint on the drive shaft. Its cheap and easy. always do the cheap and easy first!
