Hey guys got a question, I installed new return lines and caps, and they leaked bad, so I replaced the o-rings with vition fluoroelastomer #111,
now they don`t leak unless I touch the cap, if i wiggle the cap they leak is this normal? any help would be greatly appreciated...thanks.
the truck is a 89 7.3 f-250 210,000 on the clock, 5 spd, 4x4,
O-rings of any material (either Buna-N or viton) tend to get hard with heat and time. They lose some of the elasticity that they start with.
Viton has a higher temperature rating, but they still lose their elasticity. Best thing to do when you replace the return line kit is to replace it, and leave it, in other words, don't disturb it. If you do, plan on having to replace the rings again.
It could also be a cracked cap. I haven't had that on any thing I've worked on yet, but several on here have.
Does it only leak while you are touching it? That would be expected. I put viton rings on my truck about 8 months ago and have removed and installed the caps 3 times with the same rings and they still dont leak.
yeah don't even touch 'em if they don't leak.
just keep inspecting them when you check your oil.
for a little while,if you notice one leaking, you can replace the cap real carefully, leaving the Vitons alone.i did this a couple times.
now that they have been on there a while,i wouldn't try it.
id replace the whole kit again now if i saw leaks.
