I just did a 351W swap, new water pump(heavy duty), hoses, thermostat. Well, on the first trip to town, it took forever to heat up, nowhere near as fast as it did on the engine breakin. So, I pulled the thermostat(fail safe kind, stuck open) and put a regular Stant brand in, the first trip the temp gauge maoved around a bit. About 20*, figured air bubble. So, topped off the system, ran it again. Held almost a steady temp, until I would let off the gas, than it jumped up, and it sounded like it was boiling over.
Could I need to replace the t stat again, this time with a high flow one?!
If the thermostat is open, there shouldn't be a tendency for the upper hose to flatten - with a stock pump anyhow.
Maybe another bad thermostat - that could cause both the vacuum & the overheating.
The last time I replaced a thermostat, it took three tries to finally get a good one.
sounds like your turning waterpump backwards. it should be sucking water out of lower hose and pressurizing upper hose. double check belt routing and waterpump u put on. bet u have the wrong pump.
Check to make sure your lower hose isn't collapsing. That one better have a spring in it.
You're sure you have a ccw pump? and make sure you get a Stant or a Robertshaw T-stat. Even then, you might get a dud. I went through two on my Harvester when I changed my hoses & stat. first one (Stant) wouldn't open.
I make it a habit to boil any Tstat that I want to install first....alot less headache that way....You can do the redneck thing and wrap a stiff copper wire around the hose in a coil, that'll keep it from collapsing.
