Below the 12V port nearest the driver there's a half-deep pocket. What the heck is that for? It doesn't seem deep enough to do anything with. Here's a pic:
I don't have a clue...seems worthless. Change will bounce out. The only thing I can think of would be a half bag of chewing tobacco, or maybe a Levi Garrett plug.
That is where the passenger air bag controller is with the key slot to turn on or off.
My supercab has this. Crew cabs are an empty slot because kids can sit in the back.
That is also why you have a blank to the right of the TC button on the dash. It says "OFF" when the airbag is off.
It maybe a handy spot for a cell phone or for a wallet to fit in. If you're like me, I hate sitting on a wallet (not that there's any money in it after leaving the gas station!).
If it would have been just a tad deeper and angled downwards towards the inside it could actually have been used to hold something. With the way it is, even if you have something small enough to fit in there I reckon it will be sitting on the floor under your feet as soon as you touch the go pedal. Maybe even before that.

Agreed. My '89 F350 had a more useful pocket on the dash, and I've missed not having it on my last two trucks. Stuff still fell out of the '89 pocket though.
As for the smoker's kit, I made a vow that I wouldn't smoke in the 2011. Three months and 8400 miles, and only one mistake at 0500 one morning when I absent-mindedly (or still half-asleep) lit one, then held it out the window until it went out.
