Okay I do not have a back light behind my digital odometer, I also have noticed that when I changed it to the trip meter, and turn the truck off and turn it back on it appears to go back to the mileage. I was wondering if that is normal, or if I have some memory issue with the odometer. I'd like to think it would remember that I had it set to the trip meter and not the over-all mileage read out. My 2004 Ford Ranger remembered.
mine displays the total kms until i push the button, then the trip meter comes up, but only for a few seconds then it defaults back to the mileage. perfectly normal. it remembers you reset the trip meter right? it just doesnt stay on that screen? also, mine is lit. maybe your bulb is burnt out?
Some of these trucks have had issues with faulty instrument clusters and some have had issues with poor connections so you may just want to look for some loose wires and see if you can reconnect the cluster.

The backlight being out is not normal.
As for the trip going back to odometer when the truck is off, this is normal. I guess it figures you're done with your "trip" and reverts back.
My retains the selected view until I re-start the truck. It will then default to the total mileage. It is backlit as long as either the running lights or headlamps are on.
