hey my stupid filter housing broke because of my stupid k&n filter.. i need to replace it. i keep hearing about this 6637 mod, wtf is this?!? dose this have anything to do with TYMAR intakes?? and how much are tymar filters to replace when dirty. thanks
Well, I don't know about better, but it's just about as effective as an AFE... the only "downside" is you hear a lot more of the air-rush than with an AFE. However, I didn't see it worth the $40 vs. $300 price difference... also, some say that since it's open to the engine compartment, it takes in hotter air. Well, it's been proven that while the AFE takes in colder air, the air super-heats as it goes down into the engine and in reality, there's only a 5* difference in air temperature between the AFE and the 6637. Plus, LOT'S of guys including myself run it, have had NO problems, and love it! Hope this helps...
That's true... I forgot to add that. The K&N filters let too much dirt through and for diesels, that's bad! The 6637 is far superior when it comes to it's ability to filter air.
None really... the point was that 5* wasn't enough to really affect the truck. To spend the extra on an AFE in the name of a little less noise and five degrees cooler air is pretty much pointless to most of us. Like I said, MANY guys are running the 6637 and are loving it and are having no problems at all!
what are the dis advantages of sucking hotter air?
When air gets hotter, it basically "spreads out" so that for each cubic foot of hot air you pass through the intake, you get less oxygen than with cold air. So with cold air you might get 5 units of oxygen per cubic foot, where hot air only has 3 units of oxygen per cubic foot (made up numbers of course). The cylinders only pull in a set amount of air, so if your cylinder can pull in one cubic foot of air per stroke, then pulling in cold air will get your more oxygen than pulling in hot air. And more oxygen means more POWAHHHHHHH
The AFE sucks air from the outside while the 6637 sucks air from the engine bay. People think that the engine bay has hotter air - which it does. But it's only a few degrees hotter than the outside air if you're on the highway. If you're in the city, it might be 30-40 degrees warmer. Either way, it doesn't matter. The air your intake pulls in has to go through the turbo. The turbo has to compress it and by the laws of nature, when you compress something you make it really hot (which is why it's good to have a big intercooler - to cool the hot air from the turbo). After all that, 30-40 degree warmer air isn't 30-40 degrees warmer anymore - it's only something like 3 or 4 degrees warmer, due to the laws of physics. So basically, a "cold air intake" doesn't do much for our trucks.
