First i would check for ?continuity? in the rear abs speed sensor located on top on your rear axle. It has a wire plugged into in and there is a bolt right above it you remove. Next just pull it up and should come out. its only 18 dollars at auto zone and with a coke and a candy bar you can add it to your rewards. i would buy one as they just come in a box and are easily returnable.
One thing I've noticed on a 1998. If the the key switch is not lubricated, it will not fully return to the "run' position after starting. That causes the ABS light to come on. There's some sort of missing contact inside the switches. When I slowly turned the switch counter-clockwise into the correct "run" position the light went out.
Good lubrication of the switch solved it. It was like a false failure. You might want to try this first.
I have rear ABS, and the two parts, without labor, were supposedly $1200 ...
Ford mechanic said that with the rear-ABS system I could just live with not having ABS and ignore it - so I've driven it with the ABS lights on for the last ... four or five years.
I'm not spending $1200 on some stupid part Ford couldn't design cheaply, nor right - as it is a common problem with the 1999's.
on the abs issue, i myself have a 97 150, and he abs light as well is on. however the abs will not kick on for me. hasnt worked for a couple of years. is it possible that its just a fuse for it that is doing the damage? or is it another issue? any thoughts as to what to try would be greatly appreciated! thanks
If your ABS light comes on your system will not work until the light and sensor is replaced or repaired, you will not have braking problem BUT your ABS system wont activate.
Ck the speed sensor on top of the rear diff, make sure the electrial connection is clean and free of rust, ck the sensor to make sure its tight, if its loose the ABS light will come on intermittently its most likely loose if the ABS light is always on it would be a bad sensor, this is with RABS only, if your running 4w ABS make sure the front sensors are clean, these sensors will pickup junk off the front brakes.
