Symptoms: Truck will not turn over. Starter doesn't even turn. Lights do not dim. There is a click in engine compartment when key is turned. Batteries are new. Don't have anyway to see codes since it is dead in the driveway.
Could this be the dreaded CPS problem or are we looking at a bad starter?
If the engine won't turn over it is starter or starter solenoid related, could be wiring, neutral safety switch. just a few things to check. If you take the starter off, most any auto parts store will benck check it ( for free ). IT would be good to check the battery voltage before you pull the starter. My guess it is a starter or solenoid
The CPS won't come into play until the engine turns over.
As dumb as it sounds make sure your all the way in park. One day the pointer was on P but it was somehow halfway between that and reverse and my truck did the exact same thing.
What year truck? I think in '01 they changed the wiring so that the solenoid was on the starter itself. Prior to that, it was on the passenger fender. I had my solenoid crap out and bought a replacement from NAPA/AutoZone/Checker... can't remember which, but I'll say this: BUY THE OEM MOTORCRAFT PART.
Be careful.Be careful.
Crawl under the truck with a piece of wire. Clip one end to the cable from the battery and the other end to the contact where the tiny wire connects to the starter.
If the starter does nothing, you have a bad starter (or bad battery connection). If the starter cranks the engine, it's likely a soleniod.
Well knocked the starter with the hammer and she started right up. The truck was my son's 2002. Got a 2 bolt starter, $200, and installed. All good now. Thanks to everyone for the help. FTE strikes again.
