78 ford f700. used to be a propane delivery truck. it has a 361 V8 that currently runs off of propane but, can easily be converted to gasoline by installing a carb.. It has a Clark 5spd trans with a 2spd rear end. It runs and drives good. It had new brakes, kingpins, bushings in 2000. The windshield is cracked and it needs rear tires..It is not eat up with rust surface rust only..It only has 1 small dent in the hood and a dent behind the drivers door..Its not beat up.. I have no need for it..Should I junk it?
I bought it to save it from the crusher but I'll be danged if i can get rid of it...It's in my way... I would part it out but its in the way as one peice not to mention a bunch of peices..
you are going to have to wait for the economy to pick up if you want to sell it for what its worth. Just keep it around and drive it. I bet if you shorten the frame and put a 73-79 pick-up bed on it it would sell.
I've decided to keep it for a while. I'm in the process of canning the 20" locking ring rims and going with a 22.5 tubless solid ring. I want to put a low profile sleeper on it but I hate to start cutting the back out of a rust free cab.
these cabs arent really designed to be cutaway, like the vans. Maybe a separate compartment with a door. There are some pretty slick heavy trucks in the picture thread if you check it out. Glad to hear it will endure.
What I'm going to do is take the back window out and replace it with sheet metal and then I will have a solid back to work with.. The sleeper gasket will do the rest..
Does anybody know if my bell-housing for my 391 gas engine will bolt up to a 3208 Cat or will I need to change the trans? I found a Chevy c70doner factory tandem truck with a 15 speed and a re-manufactured 3208.. I want to swap the running gear over to my ford..
The clutch housing will not fit the 3208 flywheel housing. The Ford is a Ford setup. The GM with the 3208 will likely be a SAE #2 flywheel housing/bell housing adapter. The idea of using the GM running gear, is a good one. I would highly recommend taking your Ford body, and putting the whole thing on the GM frame, since they are both going to be within an 1/8" of eachother outside rail to outside rail. It would basically be like what I did with my 53-5 Big Job.
The donor truck is a 1987 GM factory tandem dump truck that I bought for scrap price..There's really nothing GM about the running gear it has a 3208 Cat that has 60,000 miles on it backed by an Eaton/fuller 15 speed and Eaton rears..My F700 has a GVWR of 24,000lbs which allows me to insure it for $22 a month and the tag is $25 a year.. I would like the idea of keeping my cab with the 24,000lbs VIN plate since I'm not going to be working it but have air brakes and a tandem frame.. The only 2 things I'm worried about are will my truck set over the cat engine without blocking the cab up off the frame? How far back in the floor is the stick gonna come up? I'm gonna have to do some measuring.
I dropped my '53-5 cab right down over the cat motor, and clark 5 speed without lifting the cab, or cutting it. The shifter came up right where the original did, but I had to emlarge the hole in my floor plate. Your cab is larger than mine, and I am almost certain you won't have to cut anything. I would, however, highly recommend taking the Ford cab mounts off the Ford frame, and transfering them over to the GM frame.
Your right I had a brain fart. I was thinking of a cab swap I done a few years ago that had a 350 cummins w a 10 speed.. The I6 engine was longer which set the stick back farther in the cab
