Question JW Towmaster trans vs BTS.....

Ok Guys, looks like I may be replacing my transmission. If I can get the wife to buy into keeping this truck for the long haul and spending the money on one of these stellar transmissions, I need to know which one will work best for me. I have always leaned in the direction of BTS, he is closer and has an outstanding reputation. John Wood's transmissions are supposedly right in line with Brian's, and since my truck is used mainly for towing I am wondering if his "Towmaster" may be a better option for me.

Can y'all shed some light on the differences between the two and why I may want to go with one over the other?

Thanks!

Like you said, BTS is closer and IMHO his "one size fits all" trans will be "more" than you'll ever need and probably the last one you'll ever buy.

I have a BTS and I am very happy with it. Brian don't make 3 different trans, he builds 1 that will hold up to the same HP that others sell for almost twice the price.

Both are great trans, best way is to call and talk to both guys and make your own decision. You can't go wrong either way.

I tow my 5th wheel (33' 2006 Cougar bunkhouse - 10,000# or so) on occasions in the big hills (The Rockies) around here with my BTS and never had any issues. The trans is as strong as the day I had it installed three and a half years ago. But I'm sure that John builds just as equally as good of a tranny so maybe just go with the shortest distance to you and be done with it.

im biased because i have a BTS in my rig. its an amazing transmission. my wife who notices nothing drove my truck (its a rare occasion) and asked me if i had done some power upgrade to it. the only thing that was different was the trans. i only let her drive it in stock mode. i also like the fact the other guys mentioned you get all or nothing with BTS. no levels of transmission building. go with the BTS since its closer and youll love your truck all over again......

No 'tunes' or upgrades will 'void' the warrenty. Two years warrenty on 'adjustments'.... I had a concern on the 'hardness' of the shifting and of the shift points'... Brian said "no problem" and put in a different shift plate. He adjusted it the way I liked it with my SuperChip installed. He told me that there was a 'thousand' different ways that he can 'adjust' your (my) transmission.... WoW....

Life time warrenty on the transmission means a lot to me. My Transmission went South a week before I was to go on 'SpringBreak'. I called him on a Monday, he fixed one up for me that night and shipped it on Tuesday and I had it on a Wed. I had a local garage put it in (Brian does it for free if you get the truck to him). Brian talked to the garage about the install and how to blow the oil lines for the 7.3 trans cooler. I was not happy with the local garages install as when I was under it I noticed that one of the bolts holding one the flywheel shroud was sticking out an inch and had several large washers on it.

Going on Springbreak I hauled my fried trans back to him (I live in Mid Mo) and Brian adjusted my shift point.

Around the begining of July my TC locked up.... ON All of the time.... I called Brian and here is part of my e-mails at that time.

7/12/10Talk to Brian and he said it was a trans issue and not the engine. I said that I would drive it over if it would not hurt the tranny. He said that it would not, just might kill the motor every now and then if I was going to slow and did not have it in "n". He said something about a solenoid or an electrical circuit was keeping the torqe converter enguaged.

I do need to get a temp gauge on the trans. I will talk to him on where and how to put one on.

This BTS Trans would not die....
<HR style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #d1d1e1; COLOR: #d1d1e1" SIZE=1 itxtvisited="1"><!-- / icon and title --><!-- message -->On Wed I was planning on driving the 265 miles from Mid MO to Lead Hill AK and have Brian work on the Tran torque converter problem. I was planning on camping in the area and do some rafting and asked him about pulling my camper down. Brian said that if I could get er going, the trans should be fine. Going forward is hard enough starting out... backing up to my camper at home I heard a big clunk and the truck stopped about three feet away from the camper and almost stalled out. It was still running but would not move backward. It would move forward and I pulled up several feet and took a fast run backward..... something bad was going on with the transmission and I found out later that a shaft going through the transmission had snapped in half. After getting er going and about 30miles down the road, there was that bad smell of burnt tranny oil. I knew that it was a goner some time down the road and had no choice but to keep going. After 125 miles and I filled up the tranny with 7 qts and heading down the road. I called Brian at BTS and told him what was going on and He said the plan will now shift from the torque converter to a complete overhaul.... if/when I can make it there. I never ran the tach over 2,000 rpms.... the speed would average about 50mph, 60for the high (down hill)and 20 for the low (up hill)... but it kept going, up hills and down in the valleys. we had started out at 6:00 in the morning and pulled into the BTS drive way at 12:30 noon hour.

Now for the warrenty.... Brian completely overhauled the tranny at no cost.... removal, rebuild, replacement, fluids... nothing. I felt really badly about the tranny going south after only owning it such a short time. I had the first one shipped to me and had it installed. Brian said as bad as it was with the shaft broke and the torque converter stuck, it still shows how well it is build and that he was in a way glad that I brought it back to him that he could put everything to BTS standards, because there was several things that upset him that the installer did. Cross member bolts were missing and wrong shround bolt that had several washers on it instead of the right bolt. The fly wheel bolts were also not torqued down and he questioned if they had 'blown out' the 7.3 cooler...

Brian had said that it would take him Wed after noon and he would finish it up on Thursday morning. My wife and I camped at a Corp of Engineers Camp Ground on Bulls Shoals lake about 2 miles from BTS Shop. On Thursday morning I called him about putting in a 6.0 trans cooler while he was working on it.... he told me that he had put a 6.0 cooler on it the night before as he would not want my 7.3 cooler on because of all of the trash and stuff that had went through it and it was not an issue of whether I paid for it or not..... I said that that was why I called... I want it... I will pay for it.... cost? 400.00 + 50.00 for the hose kit.

Talk about Service and I felt really bad about tearing up the transmission. When he picked me up and took me for a test drive back to his shop, he said that they also drained and replace the oil in the transfer case. (I found out later and he did not tell me, but his guys filled up my radiator holding tank and the windshield washer fluid...yes I knew how much was in both before I dropped the truck off).

So what did I have to pay for the removal and rebuild and install + fluids and the attention to the transfer case? 0...

The only cost that I had was for buying the 6.0 cooler... They installed it for Free (they wanted that 7.3 cooler out of there).

I drove a wounded and burning BTS over 260 miles and only God knows how much further it would have went (and He an't talking to me about that).

I give Brian and all of his employess a big Thank-you for what you have done for me and my 7.3.

I do not have to wonder about a BTS or Brians Service.... I have lived it.

If I can get the wife to buy into keeping this truck for the long haul and spending the money on one of these stellar transmissions, I need to know which one will work best for me.

Thanks for the wonderful description of your experience Brother Les. You actually answered one of my main questions which was about the warranty. I had always heard "lifetime," but the website says 2 years. I have a call in to Brian as of 9:00 this morning and am waiting for him to call me back. As much as I don't want to have to have the conversation with the wife over spending the money, there is a part of me that almost hopes my transmission is done so I can experience Brian's work myself.

I am also in a similar boat in that I need the truck to be able to pull the 5er in a couple of weeks. Hopefully, if I need to go with a full replacement/rebuild, he can work me in like he did for you.

My Brother-in-law, bought a '09 F-250 Crewcab.....

He loves the truck, but cries like baby ever time he drives it because the mpg is so bad compared to my 7.3 .

I can get 22-24 none pulling and 16 pulling.... He ant even close.

You cant go wrong with either transmission. But like was said above, you wont have an issue with a BTS and towing. Brian makes a great product. And since he is closer to u, i would lean towards him. I went with BTS because i had a dealer here in my town who got me a smokin deal for a BTS.

The Towmaster should hold anything above 350hp, and have never heard of anyone busting one. John will take care of you too.

If you Go with a BTS what would be your plan? Have one shipped to you or have yours rebuilt while you wait at his shop. (we had our camper with us and the campground is about two miles away) It is a good experience on watching him gut yours out and him showing you the difference in the parts and up grades.

Two weeks is a short time and pulling your camper and always 'wondering' about the tranny going south does not make a good trip.

Have you tried a transmission flush?

I know it sounds crazy but before my BTS, I drove my truck, with camper at around 75mph for hundreds of miles at a stretch. That is really what fried my original tranny. Brian told me that when he tore into it that the OD was the most fired gear. I told him how I drive AND WOULD drive the same way with his BTS... he did not blink an eye with that. He told me that the way he sees it that if I:

A) Raced my truck or pulled compitition drop skids, that I would see him about once a year to work on my transmission.

B) If I pulled large trailer or campers hard all of the time, that I may see him every 5-10 years.

C) If I drove my truck like a passenger car, that I would never have to bring my truck back to him...

I would absolutely love to go out to Lead Hill and have Brian install it, but I think I would have to go with having the trans shipped to me and having my mechanic install it. I trust my mechanic to do a good job, and like Brian, if something does go wrong he'll take care of it. We have another trip planned with the 5th wheel in just over 2 weeks, that's why the timeframe is what it is. Obviously, that trip is now in danger of being cancelled, but I would like to do what I can to still make it if at all possible.

When he said he'd see you every 5-10 years from pulling heavy loads, am I correct in thinking that he would fix whatever the problem is under warranty?

Well, it's official, Trans is shot.

Now I need y'alls prayers that my wife will be open-minded about our options.

Are there any success stories on rebuilds other than BTS or JW?
