The usual reason why inside door handles break is...people reach over and grab onto them to close the door...instead of using the cup or handle located on the armrest or strap mounted on the door panel.
Using the inside handle to close the door...it won't be long before the little charmer snaps. These handles are die cast (pot metal), not steel.
The idea that the handles are breaking due to operator error (pulling too hard, using the handle to close the door, etc.) may be valid on a newer truck, but on these two, I have owned them for a long time. 240k on the Bronco, 350k on the F-350. Haven't had this problem until about 220k on the Bronco, about 300k on the 350. If they were going to break due to the way the door is opened or closed, I would think the problem would have shown up a long time ago.
The info I typed pertained to everything. I sold 100's of different types of inside door handles over 35 years, so I know the reason why they usually break.
People grabbed onto them...then used them to close the door, but they were designed for people to open the door.
The absolute worst inside door handles were used on Pinto's/Granada's/Mustang's and other 1970/80's passenger cars. The damn thing broke the second you pulled it towards you.

I remember those.......I had a Mustang II, they were really fragile!
Yeah Ive been at about 4 handles on the driver door since I put my truck, driver side, into a ditch last winter. I fixed the bent rod in the door but the cheapo door handles from the auto stores keep breaking. This one has stayed on for a couple months now so im just crossing my fingers.
Next breakage Ill suck it up and get some metal ones.
I would agree that the door cable is stretched. I ended up replacing the cable on my 95 and that helped but I would still break one about every six months. You can find the metal door handels at napa.
I have never broken one. I am curious what all is entailed in converting to the older style rod setup. Can I do this and keep my plastic handles, or do I have to use the chrome ones?

I'm not sure what the rod conversion entails yet, but the handles are interchangeable.
I've never broken a handle either, and I've owned a 92, 95, 96, and 97. But I've sold a million of them-as previously stated, it's either cause you're pulling too hard or yor cables are bad. Also, the chrome handles from the earlier trucks WILL work, but they're just chintzy potmetal-I've seen guys break those, too

It is a direct bolt in. And yes you can keep your black plastic handle
^What the previous posters have said-don't pull too hard. If you still break handles, you need to replace the handle/latch/cable mechanism, but if you think $8 handles are bad the price of it will shock you (about $130 from Ford).
There is no way in hell that the plastic handle costs $130 from ford i think its like at most twenty for what i paid for mine from ford

Perhaps I wasn't clear enough-I was referring to the cable/latch mechanism for the $130 price, not the door handle, which has a retail price of $14.90 from Ford
