Autolite 4100

So, I have a 390 in my 1968 F-250. It's currently running a 1965 four barrel intake and a mild (260/260 advertised duration) Comp Cam. I'm thinking about coughing up the money for an Autolite 4100. According to the formulas (VE, Max RPM, Displacement) 600CFM should be fine. But, is it worth the money. Everything I've read says yes, but I'm trying to gauge personal experience with this carb.

An edelbrock 1406 (600CFM Performer I think?) I want to keep carbureted, but at the same time keeping it somewhat original. Not to mention, I don't really like Edelbrock. I have a wierd fascination with not going mainstream. Installing an Edelbrock performer manifold and carb is easy. Keeping a stock Ford 4V manifold with an Autolite carb is different.

I don't think you will see any performance difference in the carbs. Not sure what you are asking here yet. Autolite is a good carb if ya are wanting to keep it close to stock.

I'm just looking for (at least what I think) is a better quality carb that is actually meant for a Ford. Performance wise, 600CFM, whether it's an Edelbrock or Autolite, will get that job done. I'm just kinda into the nostalgia factor. And I guess the Autolite is a better quality carb that will last for a long, long time.

Just took the Edelbrock off my 302 and put on a 4100 1.08. Never was a real fan of the Edelbrock. It simply went on when the 1971 Holley blew a power valve one day and was practically spewing gas out the tailpipes. The Holley was better than the 1406 as it was modified by Fuel Curve Engineering back in 1975. However, low end torque was not a strong point of the car, cam and carb. I finally got annoyed enough to get a cam made for the car, and the 4100 also so I could enjoy the car more. It was fun from 70-100 mph but my interests have changed for the street.

Performance wise I'm trying to keep the motor in the torque, low rpm range. I plan on using it as a work truck and for towing (occasionally up to 8,000lbs). I'm not trying to hot rod it or build some stoplight drag racer. It's a 3/4 ton truck designed for work and that is what I intend to use it for.

Nostalgia-wise, you can't go wrong. Performance-wise, well, a Holley would do just fine too...

It's up to you if you want the nostalgia part to outweight $'s

Yeah, I'm willing to drop a little extra money on it. I'm planning on using it as a father and sons (two 13 and 11) project with the idea that this is going to be the vehicle that they learn to drive in and the one that they drive until they're 18. So, I'm trying to teach them pride in American craftsmanship and an American sense of identity. Something I think our youth are sorely missing. Oh yeah, don't trip on my soap box as you're leaving!
