Just wondering if anybody thinks it would be possible to add rear-air to an existing Expedition that didn't come with that option. I guess I'm trying to figure out what all does the factory install differently to provide the rear-air.
I came across a great deal on an XLT Expedition that has everything I need, except the rear-air. I have two small kids and I'd prefer to not make them sit in back shivering while my wife and I enjoy the heat blowing from the vents.
I know the controls are required and probably the wiring to the controls. But where's the additional blower located? Is there additional ducting required? Another blend-door needed? Or are some of these items mounted in ALL Expeditions with a parts/pieces missing to make it work, i.e. the wiring is there, just no controls connected, etc.?
Maybe I'm just chasing my tail on this? Is the rear-air/heat really even needed to keep the back comfortable?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
I don't know what year XLT you're considering, but given what's on my '03 (same as the prior model??), this wold be a *huge* job. In addition to the switchgear, etc., there's a blower under the right quarter panel, plus plumbing for heated coolant and refrigerant, plus ducting all over the place, including a number of roof vents, so you're talking a complete new headliner, too. FWIW, I like to do lots of wrenching on my cars and bikes, but I wouldn't even think of doing this project.
I have a 98 XLT in Wisconsin with no rear air. Winter is not the problem - it gets pretty warm in back once the engine warms up. On winter road trips the kids take their coats off and are plenty warm. Summer is the problem - anything over 90 degrees and it's hot up front and really hot in back.
You might want to look at a rear air set up out of an Expy with a sunroof. The vents are on the console and under the seat. The controls are also on the console along with rear audio controls. As far as the wiring goes...... thats a diffrent story. There is a blower in the base of the console also. Hope this helps!
