front end shake

i recently bought a 2004 f250 super crew 2 wheel drive w/ a 5.4. with 55000 miles. every once in a while when i take off from a dead stop, the truck will shake real bad like the front tires are about to fall off, when i apply the brakes for a few seconds then speed up the problem goes away. sometimes i wont do this for a couple of days and other times quite a bit.i checked the tie rods and they are a little weak. i did a search and believe it is a brake caliper sticking,am i in the ball park or any other suggestions.thanks for any help.

Shaking on acceleration from a stop is usually associated with the carrier bearing. This is especially true with hard starts or towing. If this is the case, shimming the carrier bearing will correct the shake.

If it is in the front end, then you may have one of the locking hubs freezing up on you.

It is a 2wd. Tie rods are weak? There should be zero play in them, if there is replace them. Just take tit to a shop, they won't charge much to diagnose it. Don't be surprised if the ball joints are bad either,I just had mine replaced at 34,000 miles, and on my truck before last it was at about the same mileage.

A brake caliper could be at fault but you would typically notice this at other speeds as well. Brake caliper issues on the SD are usually related to the slide pins. If your caliper was hanging up you would also typically get excessive heating of the brake/wheel assy.

As mentioned take the truck to a "quality" alignment shop and they will be able to diagnose any front end issues you have. If your problem is unfounded on the front end go with the carrier bearing issue as redford mentioned.

You checked the carrier bearing and it was good?

It isn't a matter of the bearing being bad. It's a function of the pinion angle and load. Shimming decreases the pinion angle and lessens the shimmy or bind when starting out.
