So what brake pads are folks running and how are they holding up. I am looking at Wagner Thermo Quiet. I have used Advance Wearever Gold in the past with good results. I get about 50k out of the Gold pads on my Ranger. I have been through 2 sets on the same Chinese rotors without issue.
The Thermo Quiet pads are absolutely GARBAGE for a truck this size. I have a set of barely used ones I will GIVE you if you don't believe me. I bought them as they were the only thing available at a point when I was chasing what I thought was a brake problem. I took my Hawk SuperDuty pads off and VERY quickly put them back on.
I love the Hawk pads. Most on here use the LTS pads but I've got the SuperDuty pads on both my Excursion and my 2000 Durango. I find they do just fine even when first getting in the truck before they have even had any time to warm up.
With the stuff that I tow, I switched both the pads and rotors in the front and soon after found out that wasn't even enough. I could still get the rears to smoke in stop and go traffic in the hot summer so I swapped to Hawk SuperDuty pads in the rear also.
I can now tow anything that you can legally put behind the Excursion in any condition (including the 100 degree+ Mississippi summers) and I'm able to stop it as many times as I need to without fade or smoke.
I've put about 40k heavy towing miles on the pads and have at least 10k - 20k more left.
Hawk LTS or Superduty pads are absolutely fantastic on this truck. I went with the slightly less aggressive LTS pads since I tow on level ground (no grades) and they have been great for the last year. They don't dust much and have no squeal so I've been very happy with them.
I tow in AZ. Would the Superduty pads be approprate for 7% grades?
Don't just do the pads. You need to do the rotors also. Maybe not the rears but at least the fronts. If its a 4x4 the rotors will fall off when you take the calipers off so it's real easy.
Rotors are fine. I am not going to be towing 10,000lbs any time soon. I also don't plan on punishing my brakes if I can help it. If I do tow, it probably won't be in the mountains. I still need to get a trailer to pull before I get too far down the road. I have already spent alot fixing this thing up. If the rotors warp I will deal with it then. My main goal is to fix the stuck front caliper and go from there. This is not the only vehicle I have to maintain and it is not the only one that needs something done to it.

Whoes rotors would you suggest to complement the Hawk pads?

stuck front caliper? What where the signs it was sticking? I assume it was on "stuck" or wheel locked. I have a bad sound every time I stop and then back into parking spot. And noticed a "whine" in the left front. Had over $400 worth of brake work done....new pads and rotors turned. Stopping is bad. The "whole caliper" and be wiggled but bolts are tight. What is going on? Please advise. Thanks.
The slider is stuck. The outside pad is wearing more than the inside pad. That is the side opposite the piston. That means when when I let off the brake that the caliper is not floating and the outside pad continues to touch the rotor after the pistons have retracted a little. It squeeks a little but other than that no outward symptoms.
If any one cares, contacted ART on a full kit for my '05 Ex, here are the details:
Front Kit (pads and rotors) $400
Rear Kit (as above) $350
order both and you get $35 off so $710 total. They will give you 10% more off as a FTE member so another $71 off! grand total = $639 + shipping.
The ART Brake Kit consists of gas-port slotted, cryogenically treated brake rotors along with a set of Posi-Quiet Semi-Metallic Extended Wear Brake Pads.
If the slide is sticking, then how do I fix it? So, unstick it... But will the slide sticking allow the whole caliper to wiggle. Not just in and out, but move around. It is raining today and I can hear the noise.
What parts are needed? And if fixing the slide, then should I caliper replacement? Rig has 108,000. It just does not want to stop and pulls to the left now.
Replaced slide pins on drivers side. Everything else seemd to be fine. But, now the KING of the Road pulls hard left when I hit the brakes. Any suggestions? There is vibration in the pedal and front end under braking. Thinking it is time to replace front calipers, rotors, and pads. Then new pads on the rear as well.
When I had my cryo treated Powerslots turned, someone responded to my post that they'd heard slotted rotors shouldn't be turned. For a definitive answer, I contacted Powerslot and they said ANY rotor can be turned, including their slotted rotors, cryo treated or otherwise.
